Lu Xiaonuan awkwardly shifted, a faint blush appearing on her fair cheeks as she hurriedly retorted, "No way! Don't say such things."
A hint of panic flickered in her lively eyes, resembling a child caught revealing a little secret.
"Hehe, I'm not saying anything untrue. Just look at your lovestruck expression," Zhang Yuqing teased, the corners of her mouth curling into a playful smile, her eyes sparkling with mischief. She stifled a laugh behind her hand and couldn't resist winking at Lu Xiaonuan.
Yan Qing walked steadily ahead of Jiang Ming, his posture tall and his gaze sharp as an eagle. Noticing Zhang Yuqing and Lu Xiaonuan beside him, he asked, "Officer Lin, may I ask who these two are?"
His voice was clear and penetrating, standing out in the somewhat noisy environment.
"Oh, you mean those two? They are the closest students to the scene of the incident," Officer Lin replied, his brow furrowing slightly with a serious expression. "The others were injured within the explosion range and have been taken to the hospital. Right now, these two are the only ones we can ask for some information."
As he spoke, he glanced at the two girls who still looked shaken, concern and worry evident in his eyes.
"Since that's the case, Officer Lin, have you managed to gather any key information?" Yan Qing's gaze was fixed intently on Officer Lin, not missing any flicker of emotion on his face.
Lin Jing shook his head helplessly. "Not yet. It seems that the words 'Mountain God' did not appear until after the explosion; they were absent before it." There was a hint of frustration in his tone as he unconsciously clenched his fists.
"Officer Lin! Officer Lin! We have casualties here!" Suddenly, two bloodied figures rushed towards them from behind, their faces filled with terror as they shouted for Lin Jing while running. Their presence stood out starkly against the nearby fence and grass.
Seeing his team members signaling to him, Lin Jing quickly turned to Yan Qing and Jiang Ming. "I have to attend to something over there. Comrade Yan Qing, you two go ahead and ask these girls. I'll be right back."
A determined look flashed in his eyes as he turned and sprinted towards his teammates with remarkable speed, stirring up a gust of wind.
Yan Qing nodded. "Alright, you go handle that. I'll take over here."
His gaze returned to Zhang Yuqing and Lu Xiaonuan, as if he could see right through them.
Zhang Yuqing and Lu Xiaonuan shifted their attention from Lin Jing's receding figure back to Yan Qing and Jiang Ming. In an instant, they seemed dazzled by the handsome police officers before them, their eyes sparkling with curiosity and admiration.
"Are you a police officer too?" Lu Xiaonuan asked softly, her voice filled with surprise. She bit her lip slightly, nervously tugging at the hem of her clothes, her eyes shining with anticipation.
Yan Qing smiled gently and nodded, revealing two shallow dimples at the corners of his mouth. "You could say that. However, I need to ask you both some very important questions, and you must answer us truthfully."
His voice was soft yet carried an undeniable authority.
Lu Xiaonuan and Zhang Yuqing exchanged glances before solemnly nodding in agreement. In unison, they said, "Feel free to ask, Officer. We're ready."
The two girls responded with the seriousness of elementary students answering a teacher's questions, their demeanor both earnest and endearing.
Yan Qing paused for a moment, chuckling helplessly to himself as he realized he had reached an age where even high school students referred to him as "uncle." He touched his face, feeling a mix of amusement and disbelief.
Beside him, Jiang Ming stifled a laugh behind his hand, his shoulders shaking slightly. Though he tried to keep his voice down, Yan Qing still caught the sound. He nudged Yan Qing with his elbow, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
Clearing his throat, Yan Qing began to inquire, "Could you tell me what time the explosion occurred? Can you recall if anything unusual happened while you were walking down this street?"
His expression turned serious as he scanned the two girls intently.
Zhang Yuqing and Lu Xiaonuan paused for a moment, slowly recalling the events. Their brows furrowed slightly as they fell into thought.
Lu Xiaonuan spoke first. "I remember glancing at the time; it was around 9:20 when school let out. Based on our usual pace, we would have been walking down this street around 9:30 when the explosion happened."
As she spoke, memories of that moment flooded back to her, fear flickering in her eyes as she trembled slightly.
Zhang Yuqing chimed in, "Yes, usually we would be walking down this street at that time. Tonight felt no different from before. We hadn't seen those two characters before either; Officer Lin asked us about them too. We only noticed them after the explosion."
Her gaze was filled with confusion as she struggled to comprehend the sudden explosion and the mysterious words "Mountain God."
Hearing this, Yan Qing and Jiang Ming exchanged serious looks. Then Yan Qing continued to probe, "While you were walking on the street today, did you notice anyone suspicious following you?"
His gaze sharpened further as if searching for crucial clues in their responses.
Lu Xiaonuan frowned thoughtfully and tilted her head. "I think there was someone... I remember turning around once and seeing a shadow lurking behind us. But I didn't look closely; there were so many people around."
Her eyes were somewhat uncertain, and her voice carried a hint of hesitation.
Yan Qing quickly asked, "Are you sure?"
A flicker of surprise crossed his eyes, as if he had caught a glimmer of hope.
Lu Xiaonuan felt a bit awkward, scratching her head and saying shyly, "I'm not very sure. Uncle Police, there should be surveillance cameras outside the school. You can check the footage later. I only caught a glimpse of it last night, so I can't guarantee anything."
Her face flushed slightly, as if she felt frustrated for not being able to provide more accurate information.
"Zhang Yuqing, are you here?"
Suddenly, an anxious voice called out from behind Zhang Yuqing and Lu Xiaonuan.
Four people came running towards them, their faces filled with worry and panic.
They were the parents of Zhang Yuqing and Lu Xiaonuan.
"Yuqing, are you okay? Come here, let me take a good look at you."
A woman rushed to Zhang Yuqing's side, her expression frantic. Her eyes were red, as if she had just been crying. She pulled Zhang Yuqing close and began to examine her from head to toe, not missing any spot that might be injured.
