Zhang Yuqing paused for a moment, as if contemplating Lu Xiaonuan's suggestion. After a while, she slowly replied, "You have a point. That place really doesn't look like a police station; it feels more like a top-secret facility. What can two little girls like us do? Helping or not helping seems to matter less now."
Her gaze shifted back to Zhou Xingshu, her expression softening. "Besides..." she hesitated, "just look at him. Even from this distance, you can feel the charm radiating from him. He's so handsome and plays basketball so well; how could he possibly be a criminal?"
Zhang Yuqing's voice grew quieter, almost as if she were talking to herself.
Lu Xiaonuan scoffed, wrinkling her nose in disdain. "What does being handsome matter? That's just superficial. Right now, he's a suspect; he could very well be the wolf hiding among the sheep. The more charming someone appears, the more dangerous they might be. Don't let his looks deceive you."
With her arms crossed over her chest, Lu Xiaonuan looked at Zhang Yuqing with a serious expression, trying to pull her back from the edge of infatuation.
Suddenly, a large hand landed on their backs, causing both Zhang Yuqing and Lu Xiaonuan to freeze in surprise.
"What are you two talking about? What wolf? Are you playing Werewolf Game?"
A clear voice rang out behind them.
It was a classmate, a girl who popped up like a curious little cat from behind Zhang Yuqing and Lu Xiaonuan.
She had overheard their quiet murmurs and noticed their eyes glued to the basketball court in the distance, seemingly fixated on Zhou Xingshu and his group.
There was nothing unusual about that; after all, Zhou Xingshu was like a shining star at school, and few girls were not drawn to him. However, the strange things these two were mumbling about piqued her curiosity, prompting her to approach and ask.
Lu Xiaonuan was startled by the sudden interruption, resembling a frightened little rabbit as she clutched her chest and quickly turned around, her eyes wide with panic. "Oh! It's you! We weren't saying anything serious; we were just talking about the Werewolf Game we played last night."
Lu Xiaonuan's voice trembled with nervousness as she unconsciously swallowed.
Zhang Yuqing reacted quickly, immediately laughing to ease the tension, her eyes crinkling into crescent shapes: "Yes, yes! We didn't come to school yesterday; we spent the whole day having fun. We played a few games and had terrible luck. We were just complaining about it here."
As she spoke, Zhang Yuqing gestured with her hands, trying to make her words more convincing.
The classmate listened, skepticism flickering in her eyes as she scratched the back of her head. A glimmer of realization crossed her face, followed by a mischievous grin that hinted at both playfulness and triumph: "Oh... so you two were out having fun. How naughty! You're already in high school and still skipping class to play. Hmph, I'm going to report you to the teacher!"
With that, she pretended to turn and sprint toward the teacher's office, her steps light and quick like a bird ready to take flight.
Lu Xiaonuan and Zhang Yuqing's faces instantly turned pale with fear.
"Don't! Please don't!"
Lu Xiaonuan shouted as she hurriedly reached out to grab the girl, while Zhang Yuqing tightly clutched her arm. "We were just joking! Wait for us!"
Their voices were filled with urgency and pleading as they frantically chased after her.
Thus, the morning break came to an end amidst the girls' playful chase.
The sunlight poured in through the classroom windows, casting a golden glow that draped over the desks like a layer of shimmering satin. The cheerful sounds of students reading filled the room, rising and falling in a harmonious melody of youth.
Yet deep within each student's heart lay an undeniable sense of panic, like the undercurrents swirling beneath a calm sea.
"Hey, did you hear? I heard there was an explosion at The Night Before Last, right outside our campus at 13 Middle School."
A girl with a ponytail whispered, her eyes filled with fear. "Luckily, my parents came to pick me up that day. I left early and didn't encounter the incident." She patted her chest, seemingly relieved to have escaped a disaster.
"Yes, yes, I heard about it too. It seems like it was reported on the news, but that report was quickly taken down. Do you think this is true? This is the second explosion already; how come the police haven't caught anyone yet?" Another girl frowned deeply, worry etched on her face as her gaze swept over her classmates, searching for answers.
"Seriously, are the police in our city that useless? Letting this criminal act so brazenly for a second time without catching him, especially right outside our school at 13 Middle School. Are they trying to stop us from going to school? Maybe I should just take a leave of absence and not come to school for a while," a boy wearing glasses said irritably, scratching his head.
"Don't say that! If you take leave, who will accompany me to school? I feel so lonely by myself," his desk mate pleaded, grabbing his arm with tears glistening in her eyes as she looked at him helplessly.
"How could you be alone? There are so many students at school; just find another good friend. My mom said I should ask the teacher for a long leave today and study at home during this time," the boy replied firmly, pulling his arm away from her grasp.
"Ah, no! Wait for me!"
His desk mate shouted anxiously, her voice tinged with a sob.
