"Hey, why isn't your partner with you?"
Lin Yeqi was sipping milk tea in the break room when she saw Rofeide walk in, unable to resist the urge to tease him.
"He's off delivering documents," Rofeide replied, too lazy to argue. Usually, speaking up would only lead to sharper jabs from Lin Yeqi.
Recently, everyone had noticed that Rofeide had become noticeably gentler, and it was quite a rarity to hear that seemingly stoic man mention a girl's name with a smile more than three times.
In contrast to Rofeide's unusual behavior, Jing Tingting seemed like a lovestruck girl, smiling so much that one could almost squeeze honey from her.
The two were inseparable, their closeness unmistakable. If anyone failed to see the signs, it would be an insult to their intelligence.
"I say, after that gathering the other day, you two must be getting along well, right?"
Lin Yeqi nudged Rofeide with her elbow, determined to dig up some gossip. "I still remember how Miss Jing pranked you; it was brilliant! I was going to strip you down and draw little turtles on you, but before I could even start, you threw up all over me. So how are you going to pay me back for my shirt? Hey, Rofeide, are you even listening…?"
Rofeide froze mid-sip, an unprecedented wave of anger washing over him.
So it was all a deception on her part? She had set a trap for him to misunderstand and then felt satisfied when he crossed the line?
Had she ever considered his feelings? Did she think about the humiliation he felt as he was led around by the nose?
In the hallway, Jing Tingting was chatting with a male colleague, her face lit up with smiles.
Rofeide felt his heart tighten; seeing her smile at someone else only made his irritation grow.
She couldn't possibly like me; she merely regarded me as a plaything to pass the time.
With such denial, Rofeide strode straight toward them.
The male colleague, noticing the leader's dark expression, greeted him briefly before fleeing in haste.
"Rofeide, I wanted to tell you about something that just happened..." Jing Tingting clung to Rofeide's arm, eager to share the day's amusing anecdotes.
"Let go."
"What's wrong with you? You look terrible. Did something happen just now..."
"I said let go! Did you hear me?" He interrupted her harshly, turning his face away. The emotions he struggled to suppress were difficult to contain, and he couldn't understand why the usually calm him had lost control.
"Why are you being so fierce? Can't you speak nicely?"
Could he have misunderstood her interaction with that male colleague?
Jing Tingting tightened her grip on him, soothing his feelings as one would comfort a child. "Are you jealous? I was just chatting with that person. You know we’re not just casual acquaintances; I only like you."
A mouthful of lies.
Rofeide replied coldly, "Well, we’ve been intimate before, so we can't be considered mere acquaintances."
But could that be called liking? Can a romantic relationship be built on deception? What did she take him for? A dog wagging its tail in submission? Someone to offer a hug when she needed comfort and a kiss when she sought solace?
"We were just a one-night stand."
"Rofeide, are you misunderstanding something?" Jing Tingting felt something was off about him today; his words dripped with sarcasm.
Although he usually came off as cold, she could always read his emotions well enough to know what was genuine.
But now, he wore an icy expression that radiated a sense of distance, pushing her out of Rofeide's world.
"Misunderstanding? Shouldn't you explain what happened after that party? You let a drunken man think we had a relationship, and you shamelessly threw yourself at him. Do you think I deserve to be treated like this? Is this how you love someone?"
With a loud slap, her hand struck Rofeide's cheek. He watched as tears streamed down Jing Tingting's face, her expression filled with hurt as she trembled.
"Is it wrong for me to like you? To you, I’m just shameless and desperate. How could you be so cruel! I will completely disappear from your sight! Goodbye!"
"Tingting..."
Why did the hurt in her eyes make it impossible for him to ignore? He wanted to step forward and chase after her but found himself frozen in place.
He had already said too much; what could he salvage by trying to win her back now? He was merely jealous of her laughter with others, dissatisfied with being neglected, worried that she didn't truly like him...
Was it because he liked her... perhaps?
