"Is this how you treat someone you're inviting?" Qin Feng said coldly.
"Boss, why waste words with him? Just take him to see the County Magistrate," one of the younger Constables suggested.
"Yeah, he's just a poor scholar. Just grab him," another chimed in.
Qin Feng glanced at them and replied flatly, "According to the Da Li Law, anyone who dares to lay hands on someone with a degree faces imprisonment at best, and execution at worst. Do you think this poor scholar doesn't count as someone with a degree? Or do you want to rebel and overthrow the Da Li Law?" His voice grew stern.
The young Constables were taken aback, their faces paling. "You... you're talking nonsense!"
"You're slandering me!"
"You want to rebel! Your whole family wants to rebel!"
"Enough!" The middle-aged captain turned and snapped at them.
The Constables quickly fell silent, lowering their heads. The captain then turned back to scrutinize Qin Feng, uncertainty flickering in his eyes. He knew that Qin Feng had sold his sister out of desperation, a type of person he held in disdain. However, seeing the little girl by Qin Feng's side made him wary; Qin Feng's demeanor was different from before.
"Cough. Scholar Qin, I apologize for the offense. They don't know better. I'm Xing Gang, the captain here. The County Magistrate has business with you; please come with me," Xing Gang said politely, cupping his fists.
Qin Feng's eyes flickered. "What does the County Magistrate want with me for no reason? Is he suspecting me?" He reached out to take Qin Wan'er’s hand and said lightly, "Then let's go."
After taking a few steps, he turned back to Xing Gang and added, "Oh, remember to fix my front door."
Xing Gang was taken aback by Qin Feng's straightforwardness but nodded in agreement. "No problem."
At the county office, instead of being taken to the main hall, Qin Feng was led to the back courtyard where the County Magistrate resided.
In the living room, a middle-aged man in his thirties, slightly overweight and dressed in an official robe, sat with an air of authority that seemed unaffected by Qin Feng's presence.
Qin Feng held onto Qin Wan'er, who was timidly hiding behind him. He did not pull her out but instead cupped his hands and asked respectfully why the County Magistrate had summoned him.
The County Magistrate scrutinized Qin Feng with a look of intrigue. Just moments ago, Captain Xing had mentioned something that he found hard to believe, but seeing Qin Feng in person, he realized there was indeed something remarkable about him.
"Hmph, how bold of you to come to the county office. It seems you are seeking death," the County Magistrate said angrily, reaching over to unveil a red cloth on the nearby table, revealing a square bronze official seal.
The living room fell silent; nothing seemed to happen. Qin Feng looked at the County Magistrate with confusion—was he being treated as a monster?
The County Magistrate paused for a moment, puzzled. "Hmm? Why is there no reaction?" He picked up the official seal, his face filled with bewilderment.
"Cough, County Magistrate," Qin Feng gently cleared his throat and suggested, "Is it possible that I am not a demon?"
The County Magistrate turned his head to look at Qin Feng again, examining him closely. Although he was dressed simply, he appeared clean and his eyes were bright—definitely not like a demon.
The County Magistrate narrowed his eyes and set down the official seal. "Then explain to me why you have changed so much. Not only did you redeem your sister, but you also lavishly bought food. Where did you get the money? And what accounts for this drastic change in your character?"
