Anger erupted within Xu Rong like a volcano. He lunged at Chen Ming, and the two of them grappled fiercely. The syringe fell to the ground, spilling blue liquid everywhere.
During the struggle, Xu Rong felt a strange power surging within him. His movements became exceptionally agile, and his strength increased significantly. Chen Ming clearly noticed this as well, a flicker of surprise crossing his eyes.
"Indeed," Chen Ming gasped, "your genes have begun to awaken."
Xu Rong ignored him and continued to attack. He noticed a red button in the corner of the laboratory, labeled "Emergency Destruction." Just then, Chen Ming suddenly pulled out a scalpel and lunged at Xu Rong with it.
Xu Rong sidestepped just in time, but the tip of the blade still grazed his arm. Strangely, the wound healed at a visibly rapid pace. Xu Rong was stunned, while Chen Ming burst into laughter. "Did you see that? This is your potential! Join us, and you can gain Eternal Life!"
Without hesitation, Xu Rong seized the moment when Chen Ming was distracted and dashed toward the Red Button. Chen Ming realized too late and tried to stop him, but it was already too late. Xu Rong slammed his hand down on the button, and a piercing alarm immediately filled the laboratory.
A mechanical voice began the countdown: "Self-destruction sequence initiated, countdown 60 seconds..."
"You've lost your mind!" Chen Ming screamed. "The research here is worth a fortune!"
"Then let it be buried with us!" Xu Rong replied coldly. He turned and sprinted toward the exit, with Chen Ming hot on his heels.
In the corridor, Xu Rong witnessed more horrifying sights:
Inside each Glass Pod were living people, some of whom had lost their human form. The walls were plastered with experimental data, detailing various inhumane human experiments. As the countdown reached the final 30 seconds, Xu finally found the exit.
He turned back and realized that Chen Ming had not followed him. Just then, he heard Chen Ming's voice shouting, "Do you think this is the end? The members of the club are spread all over the world! You can never escape!"
Xu Rong burst out of the laboratory, a massive explosion echoing behind him. The shockwave knocked him to the ground, and he felt darkness envelop him as he lost consciousness.
When he awoke again, he found himself lying in a hospital bed. Officer Zhang sat beside him, his expression grave.
"We found your wife's diary," Officer Zhang said. "She had been secretly investigating the club all along. She pretended to cooperate in order to gather evidence..."
Xu Rong took the diary, trembling as he opened it. Familiar handwriting greeted him, each page filled with his wife's fear and determination. The last page read: "If anything happens to me, please find my USB drive; it contains all the evidence..."
Xu Rong closed his eyes, silent tears streaming down his face. He knew that this battle was far from over. The members of the club were still at large, and the awakened genes within him were both a curse and a weapon.
Standing in front of the bathroom mirror, Xu Rong carefully examined his changes. A week had passed since the explosion at the laboratory, yet his body continued to transform.
The most noticeable change was in his eyes. His once brown pupils now glimmered with a faint golden hue, emitting a weak glow in the dark. His senses had also become extraordinarily sharp; he could hear whispers from downstairs and smell barbecues several streets away.
But what troubled him most was his altered appetite. Ordinary food no longer satisfied him; he felt an insatiable hunger stirring within him that he could not suppress.
Sometimes, I wake up in the middle of the night to find myself unconsciously gnawing on the bed sheets.
