"This is a side effect of gene awakening," Officer Zhang said, accompanied by the Gene Expert. "Your body is undergoing a reorganization and requires a significant amount of energy."
Xu Rong nodded, his gaze falling on the USB drive on the bedside table. It was something he had found among his wife's belongings yesterday, hidden inside her favorite hairpin.
He plugged in the USB drive, and an encrypted folder appeared on the screen. Xu Rong entered his wife's birthday and successfully unlocked it. Inside were numerous videos and documents detailing the club's global network.
Suddenly, a particular folder caught his attention. The file name read "Project Chimera."
Upon opening it, Xu Rong gasped—a record of interspecies gene fusion experiments. In the videos, scientists combined human genes with various animals, creating terrifying monsters. Some had bat wings, others were covered in scales, and some possessed tentacles like an octopus.
"These experimental subjects are referred to as 'Advanced Ingredients,'" his wife had noted. "It is said that consuming them grants special abilities."
A wave of nausea washed over Xu Rong. He finally understood why those members were so obsessed with "Special Ingredients." This was not merely a perverse desire; it was a thirst for power.
Just then, his phone rang unexpectedly. It was an unfamiliar number.
"Mr. Xu," a voice on the other end had been altered. "I know you are investigating the club. I am also a victim and wish to collaborate with you."
Xu Rong asked warily, "How can I be sure you're not one of them?"
"There should be a folder named 'White Rose' on your wife's USB drive. That was the codename she gave me."
Xu Rong quickly searched and indeed found the folder. Inside was a list documenting the members of the opposition within the club.
"Tonight at 8 PM, meet at the abandoned factory in the old district," the other party said before hanging up the phone.
Xu Rong hesitated for a moment but decided to go. He knew it could be a trap, but it was also an opportunity to uncover the truth.
That evening, Xu Rong arrived at the abandoned factory on time. His instincts told him that at least five people were lying in wait in the shadows.
"Come out," he said, "I know where you are."
A tall woman stepped out of the darkness, her face concealed by a mask.
"Impressive for a Gene Awakened," she said, "I am White Rose."
At that moment, Xu Rong's ears caught a faint "click" sound. He lunged toward White Rose just as a bullet whizzed past his shoulder.
"It's someone from the club!" White Rose shouted, "They've been following me!"
Gunfire erupted, and Xu Rong pulled White Rose behind cover. He felt a surge of power within him; his vision suddenly sharpened, allowing him to see every movement of the enemies lurking in the dark.
"Cover me," Xu Rong told White Rose before darting out like a cheetah. His speed was astonishing; before the enemies could react, he had snatched their weapons away.
The fight ended swiftly, but the last enemy, with a sinister grin before dying, said, "You can't escape... Project Chimera has awakened..."
Just as Xu Rong was about to press for more information, the man bit down on a poison capsule hidden in his teeth.
Back at the safe house, White Rose removed her mask. Xu Rong was astonished to discover that she was none other than his wife's close friend, Doctor Lin.
"After your wife discovered the truth about the club, the first person she sought out was me," Dr. Lin said, "but we never expected that the experiments at the club had progressed to this extent."
