Gu Yu was always busy. Besides helping to walk the dogs and feeding a few kittens their medicine on schedule, I mostly just watched him work.
As he passed through the break room, he handed me two small cookies and gave Dan Huang two as well.
"Are they the same?" I asked, looking at the cookies in my hand and those in Dan Huang's.
"Fair and square," he replied before hurrying off again.
Dan Huang looked at the cookie I had left, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
"Can I save this one for Dr. Gu?" I asked.
"Awoo~" he responded eagerly.
A week passed quickly. I became familiar with the other doctors in the hospital as well. doctor Xiao Wei from the Exotic Pets department had a Sugar Glider patient. It was tiny, could fly, and was incredibly adorable. I could watch it all day long.
Dan Huang came to find me, tugging at my clothes to lead me to the break room. Gu Yu was sitting there holding a Long-Eared Rabbit. My eyes lit up instantly.
"Can I pet it?" I asked eagerly.
Gu Yu placed the Long-Eared Rabbit in my arms and then turned to pat Dan Huang on the head.
"Dan Huang, you see, some people just don't have any sense of decency. Just a couple of days ago, it was 'Dan Huang, you're my best buddy,' and now it's all about the Sugar Glider and the Long-Eared Rabbit." He mimicked my tone when speaking to Dan Huang so well that I couldn't help but laugh a little.
"Woo woo woo," came Dan Huang's protest from beside us.
"Should we film a video? It could also serve as a little educational piece."
"Can we really film? Let me ask doctor Xiao Wei; he doesn't have that many patients over there." I felt a bit tempted.
"You can film in my consultation room," Gu Yu paused, "the audience for exotic pets is relatively small, so let's stick to the basics for now."
"That's true."
"Then it's settled. I'll help you communicate with the pet owners."
"Thank you so much! Dr. Gu, I promise to capture both your professionalism and your good looks!" I was already brainstorming ideas in my mind.
"Good looks, huh?" Gu Yu seemed quite pleased, "Alright."
Once we decided to film, the parents who came were quite willing to let their precious pets be featured.
After gathering enough material, Gu Yu told me to take a break for a while.
I did some chest expansion exercises in the hallway when doctor Xiao Wei excitedly waved at me from the consultation room door.
"Shishi, come quick! Zhu Zhu is shedding!"
Zhu Zhu was a pearlescent pink little snake, and I watched her struggle for three hours to refresh herself.
How amazing.
Dan Huang called me back again, and doctor Xiao Wei followed along, saying he wanted to snag a snack.
"Why are you taking so long?" Gu Yu asked as he watched doctor Xiao Wei rummaging through his cabinet.
I was still buzzing with excitement and told him it was my first time seeing a snake shed its skin.
"Aren't you afraid of snakes?"
"Zhu Zhu is beautiful; I'm not scared." She coiled around my hand like a bracelet.
"Next time you come to my house, there will be even prettier ones."
As doctor Xiao Wei spoke, he grabbed some chips and cookies and waved goodbye to me and Gu Yu as he walked away.
Once doctor Xiao Wei left, Gu Yu made a threatening gesture towards me, mimicking something with his hands. "His Mo Mo is black, this thick, this long... it might even wrap around your neck."
"I think I'll pass on that," I imagined the scene and felt I wasn't brave enough for that yet.
"If it doesn't wrap around you, will it just be like a Yam sitting there?" doctor Xiao Wei shot back as he reappeared at the door.
"I knew you were talking behind my back. Give me a box of coffee as compensation."
"If you want to see it, just come find me anytime."
"Wei Jiabao, you have a patient." Gu Yu said expressionlessly.
"Alright, alright, even Dan Huang isn't this protective over his food."
doctor Xiao Wei mumbled as he walked away.
Gu Yu turned back to me, his eyes sparkling, and I paused with the cookie in my hand.
I stuffed the freshly opened cookie back into the package and handed it back to him.
Being protective over food isn't such a bad trait; all the ones at home are like that.
"You really are..."
Gu Yu placed his hand gently on top of my head and ruffled my hair, then shoved the cookie back into my hand.
