The call lasted less than a minute before it was abruptly ended. Lu Jing sat on the sofa with his eyes closed for a while, feeling a bit dizzy. Once the sensation subsided, he got up and headed to the bathroom, his steps unsteady, clearly having consumed quite a bit that evening. The group had insisted on getting him drunk, taking turns to toast with him and not allowing any refusals. Well, it was rare for him to indulge like this.
As water cascaded down from above, Lu Jing felt more awake. He tilted his head back, letting droplets slide down his chiseled jawline, tracing over his attractive collarbone and well-defined chest, finally trickling down to his firm abdomen. After finishing his shower, he felt considerably more alert. Stepping out of the bathroom with damp hair still dripping, he wrapped himself in a towel. To avoid a headache in the morning, he slipped on some slippers and went to the kitchen to pour himself a glass of honey water. Sipping it while scrolling through WeChat, he noticed messages in the class group chat inviting him to get together when they had time. He replied with a simple "Okay," then lay back on the sofa and drifted off into a light sleep.
The weekend passed quickly, and tomorrow marked another workday. Sang Yu lived in the suburbs, quite far from her workplace. Usually, she stayed in a rented apartment and hadn’t been home for nearly a month. Today, she decided to visit her mother and hurried back after dinner.
While in the taxi, Sang Yu idly browsed her phone and noticed numerous messages in her high school group chat. Curiosity piqued, she clicked in. Normally, she avoided reading those messages because she feared encountering anything about that person; yet she couldn’t bring herself to leave the group. Each time she saw new messages, she had to suppress the urge to click on them.
For some reason this time, she felt compelled to take a look. Turning her head to gaze out the window, she noticed it had grown dark outside, with lights illuminating the streets. As she opened the group chat and began scrolling from the top, she thought that with so many people in the group, not all of them would be discussing him. However, as fate would have it, the very first message was about him. Seeing those three characters—Lu Jing—Sang Yu fell silent for a moment. It had been so long since she had intentionally avoided hearing that name.
“Miss?” The taxi driver’s voice broke her reverie.
“Yes?” Sang Yu turned to look at him.
“We’ve arrived,” he said, pointing out the window.
“Oh! I’m sorry! How much is it?” Sang Yu asked sheepishly as she hurriedly opened WeChat to scan the payment code stuck behind the passenger seat.
“Ten,” said the driver.
“Please check!” Just as she spoke those words, a woman’s voice came from her phone: “Ten yuan.”
Sang Yu smiled awkwardly as she got out of the car, carrying vegetables her mother had picked from their garden.
Once home, Sang Yu sighed in relief and quickly set her things down on the floor. She shook her hands to relieve some discomfort in her fingers; although she hadn’t brought back much from home, her mother insisted on sending her back with a watermelon grown by her father. Looking at the bag filled with vegetables and fruits, she couldn’t help but marvel at how productive their garden was!
Her family lived locally; her mother was Professor Yun Da. When Sang Yu and her sister were in school, they lived in the city center. However, after her sister Sang Xia got accepted into university two years ago, their parents sold their city house and bought a luxurious villa not far from Yun Da’s workplace in the suburbs. They transformed part of their spacious yard into a small vegetable garden. Every time Sang Yu returned home, she brought back enough vegetables to last her an entire week.
After graduating, she returned to her hometown and enrolled in classes for nearly a year before passing an exam that secured her a position as an elementary school teacher. Unfortunately, the school assigned to her was quite far from home; thus, she rented a small apartment not too far from work but still somewhat remote. She usually stayed there during workdays and only returned home every so often under the pretense of not wanting to disturb her parents' world together.
Of course, part of her reluctance to visit frequently stemmed from fearing their nagging; despite being a university professor, her mother could be just as chatty as any rural housewife when it came to lecturing.
Eagerly returning home, Sang Yu took a refreshing shower; even without moving much during summer days like this one, one could easily break into a sweat. After changing into pajamas, she began sorting through what she had brought back from home and started cleaning up since it had been nearly a week since her last thorough cleaning session before coming home this time.
Finally, drenched in sweat and feeling quite uncomfortable, Sang Yu looked at himself and sighed in frustration. He smacked his forehead, realizing he had made a mistake. At that moment, all he could think about was finishing his shower quickly to feel better, completely forgetting about the need to clean up first. Now, there was nothing to do but take another shower.
