Sang Xia stood by, watching the scene unfold, thinking to herself: She was right all along; this scumbag was indeed the one. However, she never expected her sister would discover it so quickly. Tsk tsk, if he really wanted to marry her sister, he was in for a tough time!
"Young man, you should leave. Don't come looking for my daughter, Sang Yu, again!"
"Auntie, I was wrong before, and I apologize. But I truly like Sang Yu now!"
Sang Yu looked at Lu Jingzhi, indifferent to whether his feelings were genuine or not. "In any case, we will not agree to you two being together. Just go."
"Sang Xia, go with your sister," Sang Yu instructed.
"Go on ahead, sis. This old couple is just angry right now; we can talk about it tomorrow," Sang Xia whispered to Sang Yu while pulling her arm.
"Be good! Just go with your sister; it's fine. I'll handle this." Sang Yu wanted to reach out and ruffle Sang Xia's hair but hesitated under the scrutiny of three pairs of eyes and ultimately refrained from making any gesture.
Sang Xia finally understood why her sister liked this man. He had broad shoulders and long legs, a good demeanor, and an appealing voice.
She had heard from Lin Yue that he was quite handsome and had been the school heartthrob. However, now he looked battered and bruised from his father's beating, making it hard to see his charm. Listening to him sweet-talk her sister gave her goosebumps; no wonder her sister had fallen into his love trap again. With a voice like that, who wouldn't be smitten?
Sang Yu followed Sang Xia into the house with heavy steps. Outside, Lu Jingzhi still wanted to say something to Sang Yu, but she and Sang Xia ignored him and turned away.
"Hey!" Lu Jingzhi sighed. He figured he should go home and think of a way out of this situation.
He limped out of the neighborhood, grateful it was nighttime so no one could see his disheveled state except for the old man at the gate.
The old man remarked, "This young fellow got beaten pretty badly."
"What happened between you two?" Sang Xia asked as she and Sang Yu sat on the sofa, her expression grim.
"Well... we ran into each other a while back, and then he started pursuing me, so I agreed," Sang Yu said quietly, unable to muster the courage to meet her gaze.
"He pursued you, and you just agreed? Have you forgotten all the lessons you learned before?" Sang Xia's voice rose involuntarily in frustration.
"I didn't agree at first! But then I saw he was sincere, so... I said yes," Sang Yu replied defensively.
"Sang Yu, have you forgotten how much pain he caused you before? We haven't forgotten! If we hadn't discovered things early last time, we could have lost you! It hurt us deeply." The memory of Sang Yu attempting suicide after taking sleeping pills pierced through Sang Xia's heart; how could she ever forgive that boy?
Sang Yu lifted her head to look at Sang Xia. "Dad, I'm sorry! I'm sorry for making you worry."
"That kind of thing won't happen again. Before I agreed to him this time, I thought it through. If it happens again, I'll completely give up on him and never contact him again. Please let me try one more time," she pleaded earnestly.
"Sang Yu, we can't bear the pain of losing you again. So let's end this here. You two shouldn't meet anymore. No matter what you say, I won't agree. Just give up on this!" With that, Sang Xia walked towards the bedroom.
"Dad! Dad!" Sang Yu's cries did nothing to stop Sang Xia's retreating figure as she ascended the stairs.
Sang Yu looked on with tear-filled eyes at her sister's back.
"Hey! Da Bao, even your mom doesn't approve of you two being together. Think about it carefully. I'm going to check on your dad. The old man has high blood pressure, and she's worried it might spike again."
