However, no matter how hesitant Rao Jie was, Wu Rong remained steadfast.
Soon, a flurry of phone calls from relatives began. Relatives who had never shown any concern for her before were now eager to invite her out for meals and conversations, or they would earnestly persuade her. They reminded her of the significance of family and the importance of kinship. They warned her not to think that marrying meant she could truly abandon her family. What if, in the future, her in-laws faced difficulties and she fell out with her own family? She would end up completely alone. Moreover, forcing her own brother into prison was an act of a heartless wolf that turned its back on its kin.
At times, Rao Jie found their contradictions baffling. One moment they would say that marrying meant she was still part of the Rao Family, and the next moment they would insist that once married, she was an outsider. It was truly ridiculous.
In the end, Rao Jian and Hu Ze were imprisoned for attempted crimes, receiving sentences of eight months and one year respectively. Although the time was not long, it left a permanent stain on their lives. It was then that both the Rao Family and the Hu Family realized that the man Rao Jie married was not just an ordinary university professor; he was someone both families had struggled tirelessly to deal with but could not.
With the charges set, there was no point in further struggles from either family. Thus, Rao Jie and Wu Rong's lives finally settled into a semblance of peace. As June approached, Rao Jie busied herself with her final defense while Wu Rong aimed to complete his project before leaving.
One day, Wu Rong had a meeting at school with Ye Ming to discuss work, so Rao Jie returned home early. As soon as she stepped through the door, she noticed someone was at home. The first to rush over was Wu Xin.
"Sister-in-law!" Wu Xin exclaimed as she enveloped Rao Jie in a bear hug.
Although Rao Jie felt delighted by this surprise, the two people following Wu Xin sent a wave of shock through her.
"Uncle and Aunt, you’re here!" Rao Jie’s voice rose with nervousness.
Wu Xin chuckled and quickly let go of Rao Jie. Before she could correct her, her mother rushed over and hugged Rao Jie tightly. Previously, Mother Wu had always liked the well-behaved girl, but now her feelings for Rao Jie were filled with gratitude and affection.
Mother Wu held Rao Jie close, gently patting her head, so happy that she could almost cry. "Good child, Jie Jie, why are you still calling us Uncle and Aunt? Come on... call us Parents... my good child."
Wu Xin burst into laughter at the sight of the stiff Rao Jie and hurried to help her sister-in-law by pulling away the excited Mother Wu. "Mom, give my sister-in-law a moment to adjust. Brother is so nonchalant about the marriage that she’s still trying to catch up."
Mother Wu nodded vigorously, "Yes, yes, it’s all my son’s fault. Jie Jie, please don’t hold it against that brat!"
At this moment, Father Wu also stepped forward, though his demeanor was much more reserved. "Rao Jie, you must be tired. Come sit down; let’s have a good chat. It’s been so long since we last met."
Thus, Rao Jie found herself surrounded by the Wu family on the sofa, as if she were a guest visiting for the first time. She felt incredibly nervous and wished Wu Rong had given her a heads-up.
As soon as she sat down, Rao Jie quickly said, "Should I make you some tea?"
But she was pulled back down by Wu Xin and Mother Wu on either side.
Mother Wu's face was beaming with joy. "Don’t rush, don’t rush! Jie Jie, aren’t you shy to call us that yet?"
Rao Jie suddenly felt so nervous that she didn’t know what to say.
Wu Xin quickly chimed in to help: "Jie Jie, just say it officially! You’ve already gotten your marriage certificate with my brother. Besides, you know my parents!"
