"Look!" Li Mei pointed at the video.
In the footage, the Chief Inspector was arguing with Zhou Huifang. "What evidence do you think you have? Those records of fund transfers? Ridiculous!"
"It's not just about the funds," Zhou Huifang replied calmly.
"There are all the illegal transactions you conducted using the theater. I've documented it for a full decade."
"Do you really think you can survive long enough to hand over that evidence?"
"I already handed it over," Zhou Huifang smiled. "Just this afternoon. You'll never find it."
The video ended there. Zhou Yu tightly grasped my hand. "So they killed my mother but couldn't find the evidence?"
"The evidence is in this room," Li Mei suddenly said. "Zhou Huifang is clever; she hid the evidence in the most obvious place."
I looked around. "What do you mean?"
"This wall," Li Mei tapped on the surveillance wall. "Did you hear that? It's hollow."
The alarm grew more urgent, and the water level continued to rise in the surveillance footage.
"We don't have time!" I drew my sidearm and aimed at the wall. "Everyone, step back!"
Bang! Bang! Bang!
After three shots, cracks appeared in the wall. Xiao Wang rushed forward and kicked it open, revealing a hidden space inside.
"Oh my God..." Zhou Yu gasped, taking a deep breath.
Hidden within the wall were dozens of hard drives and a thick notebook.
The cover of the notebook read: "To my beloved daughter, the truth is the best revenge."
At that moment, the lights in the room went completely out.
In the darkness, I heard heavy footsteps approaching from the corridor.
"They're coming," Li Mei Gui suddenly said. "Cheng Jianye won't let us leave alive."
I quickly assessed the situation. "Xiao Wang, take Zhou Yu through the emergency exit. Li Mei, you gather evidence. Li Mei Gui..."
"I'll hold them off," she interrupted me. "This is what I owe Zhou Huifang."
Water had already flooded into the corridor, and a chill crept up from my feet.
I signaled everyone to move while I stood guard at the door with my gun drawn.
The footsteps grew louder.
Suddenly, a bullet whizzed past my ear and struck the wall.
In the darkness, gunfire erupted all around us.
Using the faint glow of the emergency lights, I saw at least five figures at the end of the corridor.
"Surrender now!" Cheng Jianye's voice echoed, "You are surrounded!"
"Really?" I scoffed, pressing the button on the remote in my hand.
Suddenly, the entire theater's lighting system activated, blinding the attackers with a flood of bright light.
"Now's our chance!" I shouted into the intercom.
Outside, the roar of helicopters filled the air as dozens of SWAT officers burst through the skylight.
"You..." Cheng Jianye stared at me in disbelief, "You were prepared?"
"Since the moment you appeared in the parking lot," I raised my sidearm.
"Every move you made was under our surveillance."
As soon as Li Mei spotted Cheng Jianye, I had secretly notified reliable backup.
That seemingly malfunctioning intercom was actually connected to another channel.
"Quite an impressive performance," a familiar voice rang out. Chief Inspector emerged from the end of the corridor, "But unfortunately, you are still too naive."
He pressed a device in his hand, and suddenly a massive explosion rocked the basement.
"No!" Li Mei Gui screamed, "There’s... there’s..."
"What is it?" I demanded.
"There is more evidence! That is our real database!"
But it was too late.
The tremors from the explosion caused the ground to begin collapsing.
Water surged in from all directions, trapping us in this sinking space.
At that moment, Li Mei suddenly laughed, "Did you think I would put all my hopes in one place?"
She pulled out a miniature projector from her pocket and aimed it at the wall.
The image displayed a live-updating webpage: all the evidence, all the videos, were being broadcasted across the internet in real-time.
"Impossible!" The Chief Inspector's face turned pale. "All networks have been cut off!"
"Who said I was using the internet?" Li Mei said triumphantly. "This is satellite signal."
The water level rose rapidly, and Cheng Jianye and the Chief Inspector were subdued by SWAT.
I turned to look for Zhou Yu, only to find she had somehow returned to the room.
"Zhou Yu! We need to go!" I shouted.
"Wait!" She pulled out a photograph from her mother's notebook. "I want to take Mom with me."
Just then, the ceiling suddenly collapsed.
I lunged forward and pushed Zhou Yu aside, a piece of concrete crashing down onto my shoulder.
"Lin!" she screamed.
"Don't worry about me! Just go!"
The last memory I have is of the helicopter's searchlight piercing through the water, its blinding glare.
Three months later, I attended the trial of Cheng Jianye and the Chief Inspector.
They, along with the criminal network behind them, received their due punishment.
Li Mei continued to work with the theater, this time as the Artistic Director.
Li Mei Gui received a reduced sentence after pleading guilty.
As for Zhou Yu, she adapted a play using her mother's notes.
On the day of the premiere, I sat in the audience, watching her apply makeup in front of a mirror.
She smiled at me through the reflection and said, "This is the final performance."
"No," I replied. "This is a new beginning."
