A few days later, following the successful conclusion of the school's themed discussion, the relationship between Ling Yu and Liu Ting gradually began to warm. Soon, this news reached Xing's ears.
"Xing, have you heard? Your girlfriend seems to have developed an interest in some guy named Ling Yu. You better hold onto her tightly, or I might only recognize you as my brother-in-law!" Liu Jiang, who is Liu Ting's older brother and a member of the school's basketball team, remarked. His skills were impressive, and he often found himself in fierce competition with A Fei on the court.
Upon hearing this, Xing felt a surge of anxiety within him, but he maintained a facade of indifference and responded dismissively, "Ling Yu? That guy is just a bookworm; what could he possibly offer? Liu Ting is just chatting with him; it's only been a few days—how could she change her heart so quickly?" Seeing Xing's reaction, Liu Jiang chose not to press further. He patted Xing on the shoulder and walked away. Left standing there, Xing's eyes revealed a hint of contemplation; he knew he couldn't afford to be complacent.
That afternoon, Xing gathered Liu Jiang and a few friends to wait at the dormitory entrance for Ling Yu.
At that moment, Ling Yu's phone rang—it was A Fei calling. "Ling Yu, I heard that Xing knows about you and is waiting for you at the dorm entrance. You mustn't go back; he even threatened to beat you up."
Ling Yu was enjoying spicy hot pot with Liu Ting when he received A Fei's call. He merely smiled, not wanting to worry Liu Ting.
"I need to step out for a bit," he told Liu Ting. Although puzzled by Ling Yu's sudden seriousness, she nodded in agreement.
Meanwhile, someone else chimed in, "Hey, I just heard that Ling Yu is currently having hot pot with your girlfriend at East Gate’s A Liang’s place. The Home Inn is right next door! If you don't hurry up, you might end up wearing a green hat."
Ling Yu thought to himself that Xing was being overly stingy by not letting him pursue Liu Ting. However, he also understood that if he wanted to be with Liu Ting, this issue needed to be resolved first. Taking a deep breath and gathering his courage, he prepared to face the situation. After bidding farewell to Liu Ting, he resolutely headed toward the dormitory, knowing that only by settling things with Xing could his relationship with Liu Ting truly begin.
Under the cover of nightfall, Ling Yu walked toward the dormitory building and soon encountered Xing and his friends who had come looking for him. A storm cloud hung over Xing's face as hostility flickered in his eyes. Ling Yu stopped in his tracks and calmly regarded him.
"Xing, we need to talk." Ling Yu's tone was firm and unafraid. Xing scoffed derisively, a smirk curling at the corner of his mouth but said nothing. The atmosphere between them grew tense and silent as if a storm was about to break.
"What do you want to talk about? Liu Ting isn't anyone's property; we're all young adults here. Matters of the heart shouldn't be settled with fists," Ling Yu stated evenly, attempting to break the deadlock.
Xing's clenched fists trembled slightly as his gaze grew complex; his inner turmoil was evident. The surrounding crowd watched in silence as the campus was unusually quiet under the night sky, only illuminated by the patchy shadows cast by streetlights reflecting their taut expressions.
"Let's compete fairly then. Xing, I understand your concerns, but I have my own feelings and choices too. Why don't we leave it up to Liu Ting to decide who she wants to be with?"
Ling Yu's suggestion caught Xing off guard slightly; whispers began circulating among the crowd as if this approach had gained their approval.
However, Ling Yu clearly underestimated Xing's fury. "Everyone knows that Liu Ting is my girlfriend while you're just some pretty boy who dares to pursue her."
Xing's words cut through the stillness of the night like a knife. Ling Yu stood firm and resolute, showing no signs of retreat. Xing glared at him with rage that seemed ready to consume everything around them.
At that moment, a clear voice broke through the tension: "What are you all doing here?" Liu Ting stepped out from the crowd, her gaze shifting between Xing and Ling Yu, confusion and unease etched on her face. Her presence complicated the already tense atmosphere as both Xing and Ling Yu turned their attention toward her, freezing the moment in time.
