At the end of the year, Wu's Mother took leave early and brought Wu Yunyun back to Yun Cheng. Yun Cheng was a small city in the southern region, and Wu Yunyun's grandparents lived in the suburbs. During winter, their bedroom lacked underfloor heating and relied solely on an electric heater for warmth.
Upon entering, her grandfather took Wu Yunyun's hand and guided her to a chair beside the heater, offering her freshly baked sweet potatoes. He remembered that these were Wu Yunyun's favorite snacks when she was little.
As Wu Yunyun peeled the sweet potato, she noticed her grandfather walking much slower than usual. Knowing he had knee problems, she turned to Wu's Mother and said, "Mom, let's take Grandpa to the hospital to check his knee."
After saying this, she handed half of the sweet potato to him. Her grandfather looked at his daughter and replied, "There's no need to go. It's hard for you to manage everything outside while taking care of Yun Ya Tou. This is an old issue; it’s not serious."
Her grandmother watched him silently, wanting to say something but holding back. Wu Yunyun glanced at her mother, waiting for her to speak.
Wu's Mother gently patted her daughter's head and said, "We should go. It won't cost much for the two of us to stay and eat for a month; we’ve saved quite a bit. Tomorrow, we’ll call a car and take you both to the hospital in the city."
Wu Yunyun felt relieved.
The next day, her grandfather couldn’t refuse the two of them and accompanied them to Yun Cheng First People's Hospital. The hospital was large, and after being guided by several staff members, they registered for an appointment with an orthopedic specialist and waited outside the consultation room.
After waiting for an hour, Wu Yunyun noticed her grandfather occasionally glancing toward the consultation room with his leg trembling slightly. Unsure how to comfort him, she simply held his hand and rested her head gently on his shoulder.
Finally, it was their turn. After carefully asking about his condition, the doctor instructed them to get some X-rays done. It was then that Wu Yunyun realized her grandfather's situation was worse than they had anticipated.
In the afternoon, they received the X-ray results. The doctor diagnosed him with degenerative changes in the knee joint leading to arthritis, suggesting that he could undergo knee replacement surgery. Hearing the word "surgery" made Wu Yunyun's scalp tingle with anxiety.
Next, Wu's Mother discussed options with the doctor while Wu Yunyun held onto her grandfather as he attempted to leave. In the end, they decided to think it over before scheduling a suitable time for the surgery.
On their way home, her grandfather expressed his reluctance about undergoing surgery, insisting it was unnecessary to spend money on something he deemed frivolous. He added that at his age, he didn't have many days left; life would go on regardless of how it was lived.
Wu's Mother started off patiently explaining things to him, but soon it escalated into an argument. She kept blaming herself, saying she was incapable and unable to provide her parents with good medical resources. Gradually, her cries grew louder, and Wu Yunyun tried to comfort her. Eventually, their grandfather relented and agreed to cooperate with the doctor's treatment.
When they got home, Wu Yunyun went to the bathroom. Looking at her red eyes in the mirror, she washed her face and suppressed her feelings of distress.
That evening, during dinner, the atmosphere was very quiet. After the meal, Wu's Mother chatted with their grandparents about the surgery, asking Wu Yunyun to return to her room first.
In her room, Wu Yunyun took out her phone and opened WeChat. She noticed that Gu Si Yi had sent her several messages, saying he was currently in Iceland and sharing photos of the Azure Ice Cave.
Wu Yunyun typed and deleted messages repeatedly before finally replying: "Hope you have fun." She opened the photos he sent, zooming in on one where he squinted against the light, giving a thumbs-up to the camera. It was clear that he was truly enjoying his trip.
Scrolling up, she watched a video he had sent her. The screen was filled with icy blue scenery; just looking at it made her imagine how breathtaking it must be in person.
After finishing all his messages, Wu Yunyun turned off her phone screen and lay back on her bed with her eyes closed.
