"Because you're cute." Gu Si Yi's lips curled into a smile, though the warmth didn't reach his eyes.
"I see." Wu Yunyun turned to admire the sunset. This reason was better left unsaid.
After that day, things between them became subtly different. Wu Yunyun found herself wanting to share things with him before they met, and when they chatted, she would observe his expressions. If he didn't seem particularly interested, she would quickly change the subject.
Gu Si Yi noticed her smiling but remained oblivious to her unusual behavior.
As the month progressed, the rain in Teikyo increased. Wu Yunyun packed two umbrellas in her backpack every day. Although she hadn't needed them yet, she still brought them along.
One day after school, Wu Yunyun waited at the school gate for Gu Si Yi as usual. Han Hanyue ran over and, seeing her lost in thought, asked directly, "In a few days, Gu Si Yi's birthday is coming up. Have you thought about what gift you want to prepare for him?"
Seeing Wu Yunyun's blank expression, Han Hanyue feigned shock. "You don't know yet?"
Then she smirked, realizing that Gu Si Yi hadn’t even told her about his own birthday, which meant he was just playing around with her.
"Well, as his ex-girlfriend, I can share this news with you—his birthday is next week."
Han Hanyue knew that someone as modest as Wu Yunyun probably wouldn't be able to prepare a decent gift anyway. By then, Gu Si Yi might even get tired of her early.
After Han Hanyue left, Wu Yunyun stood there in a daze. He was going to have a birthday soon, and she hadn’t even known about it.
When Gu Si Yi exited the school gate and saw Wu Yunyun still standing there lost in thought, he called out to her a couple of times. When she finally snapped back to reality and looked at him, he asked, "What are you thinking about?"
Wu Yunyun regained her composure and asked, "You're having a birthday soon?"
Gu Si Yi thought for a moment and nodded.
"How did you know?"
"Your classmate told me."
"You don’t need to feel pressured; it’s just a birthday." To be honest, he himself didn’t have any expectations for such days.
Seeing his calm demeanor made Wu Yunyun’s earlier frustration dissipate instantly. Perhaps it was because he didn’t care about it himself that he chose not to tell her.
"Actually, I didn’t think much of it either," Wu Yunyun laughed lightly. "Let’s head back."
On the way back, Wu Yunyun asked Gu Si Yi, "If I were to say, hypothetically, what kind of birthday gift would you want?"
Gu Si Yi knew that although she didn’t say it out loud, she still kept this matter in her heart. Thinking of this, he gently ruffled her soft hair, thinking what a little fool she was.
Since Gu Si Yi ultimately didn’t tell Wu Yunyun what he wanted, she decided to consult her best friend, Yu Chan.
Yu Chan pondered for a moment before replying, "Someone like Gu Si Yi, coming from a wealthy family, actually lacks nothing. You just need to express your feelings appropriately."
After hearing this, Wu Yunyun felt even more troubled. She genuinely wanted to celebrate a meaningful birthday with him. Most importantly, she wanted it to be from her.
"Otherwise, I could give you the key to another house my parents prepared for me. You could invite Gu Si Yi there and spend time together," Yu Chan suggested, but left the rest unsaid.
Wu Yunyun thought about it but ultimately dismissed the idea. If Gu Si Yi really went there, he might see her as just another casual woman.
Forget it; I’ll think of something myself.
"Don’t put too much pressure on yourself," Yu Chan said as she patted her shoulder.
Wu Yunyun nodded, unable to suppress a smile. Even those around her, including Gu Si Yi, felt that preparing a birthday gift for him was a daunting task.
In truth, she felt more joy than pressure; being able to celebrate her beloved's birthday was inherently a beautiful thing.
