In the days leading up to Yun Cheng, Wu Yunyun had only one goal: to get into a good university. After the college entrance examination, when the results came out, Wu Yunyun scored slightly lower than her usual performance, but she was still able to enroll in a decent university.
Wu's Mother quickly shifted her focus to helping Wu Yunyun choose a major. She believed that girls should opt for teacher training colleges, as it would make finding a job easier after graduation. However, Wu Yunyun was determined to pursue medicine. She had seen her mother's declining health and felt helpless about it. She disliked that feeling of powerlessness.
In the end, Wu's Mother could not persuade her daughter otherwise and agreed to let her study medicine. Due to her refusal to accept an adjustment in her major, Wu Yunyun ended up attending an ordinary second-tier university. She had no complaints; from the moment she stepped through the university gates, she believed she would become a great doctor in the future.
During her internship in her fourth year, when Wu Yunyun truly entered the hospital, she realized that the sense of helplessness she felt in facing this profession outweighed any sense of achievement. Her overwhelming sense of responsibility often left her exhausted. Consequently, after a year of working in the hospital, Wu Yunyun decided to resign.
When Wu's Mother learned about Wu Yunyun's decision, she felt as if the sky was falling. She scolded her daughter over the phone and lamented that if only she had chosen a teacher training school, she could have been a teacher by now. Listening to her mother's complaints on the other end of the line, Wu Yunyun finally assured her that she would find another job.
At the end of the call, Wu Yunyun coughed lightly twice, which alerted Wu's Mother. She inquired about her daughter's condition, but Wu Yunyun simply said it was just a slight cold. In reality, she had been suffering from allergic cough for nearly six months. She knew that telling her mother would only increase her anxiety, so she chose to endure it alone.
After hanging up with her daughter, Wu's Mother pondered for a long time about why things had turned out this way. She had never relaxed her expectations regarding Wu Yunyun's studies; her daughter had always been her pride and joy. After Wu Yunyun started working at the hospital, she would tell everyone that her daughter was a doctor. Each time she said this, people would praise how accomplished her daughter was. Yet, she could never have imagined that one day her daughter would resign.
Because of this incident, Wu's Mother fell into despair for nearly two months. During this time, when Wu Yunyun called, she barely paid attention to her. It wasn't until Old Lady Gu advised her not to place too much importance on fame and fortune—warning that it could ruin family relationships—that Wu's Mother experienced an epiphany.
When she called Wu Yunyun again, her tone was filled with concern as she urged her daughter to come back to Teikyo and not rush into finding another job just yet. Unable to refuse her mother's wishes, Wu Yunyun nervously set off on the journey back to Teikyo.
Upon arriving in Teikyo, she chose not to stay with the Gu Family but instead rented an apartment in Kangqiao District with a roommate. After settling in, Wu Yunyun went to visit Wu's Mother. When Wu's Mother found out that she had rented a place outside, she scolded her again but then handed over the keys to their family home and told her that she was welcome anytime.
Wu Yunyun took the keys and promised her mother that she would find work as soon as possible.
That night, the mother and daughter talked a lot. Wu Yunyun only picked the good things to say, but Wu's Mother felt a strange discomfort in her heart as she listened.
She knew that she had gradually pushed her daughter away. She was used to being a strong woman, but her daughter was soft-hearted and had not inherited even a fraction of her toughness.
She worried deeply about her daughter's future.
