After arriving at school, Gu Si Yi felt a persistent sense of anxiety. Later, another teacher reminded him that it was the fifteenth day of the month. He quickly swapped classes with other teachers and rushed back.
Wu Yunyun was waiting for her ride. Feeling tired, she leaned against the wall behind her. She watched the app on her phone as the driver got closer to her location. Just when he was less than three hundred meters away, a black car stopped in front of her. She recognized that car all too well; she had sat in the passenger seat multiple times before.
Wu Yunyun quietly stepped back a bit, her eyes glued to the screen, but the icon inside seemed to drift further away. Then, someone emerged from the driver's seat.
Gu Si Yi looked at her and asked, "Where are you going?"
"I just wanted to take a walk," Wu Yunyun replied awkwardly, forcing herself to respond. She had never seen him this angry before, but what was there for him to be angry about? They had agreed to end things.
In that moment of eye contact, the driver arrived and honked at Wu Yunyun. "Aren't you coming?"
Wu Yunyun glanced at Gu Si Yi. His intense gaze made her feel pressured, so she apologized to the driver, "Sorry, sir, someone is here to pick me up."
The driver grumbled as she canceled the ride and drove off. Wu Yunyun paid for the cancellation and turned off her phone.
"Gu Si Yi," she began, "I originally wanted to handle this on my own, but now I still need your help. Can't we part on good terms?"
"No," he replied.
"But I've come to terms with it," she insisted.
"Why? Are you unhappy being with me?" he pressed.
"I'm unhappy; I've always felt pressure."
"That has to be for a reason, Wu Yunyun. Is it just because I'm Gu Si Yi?"
Wu Yunyun didn't understand why he needed her to articulate everything so clearly. Taking a deep breath, she said, "Actually, it's just like your reason for letting go years ago. I've always understood that our differences are too stark. This past six months have been my wishful thinking; now that I've woken up from this dream, I want to live my own life."
"Do you not have confidence in me?"
Wu Yunyun nodded slightly, "If that's how you want to put it."
Back in middle school, it was that hot pot meal that cost over eight hundred. Now that she was grown up, it was those brand-name items she couldn't even name.
Well, they didn't belong to her.
Gu Si Yi gazed at her intently for a moment, "I understand now."
"Mm."
For some reason, Wu Yunyun felt like crying at that moment. She pinched her hand, forcing herself to hold back the tears.
"Shall I take you home?"
"Sure."
The two remained silent during the ride. When Wu Yunyun got out of the car, Gu Si Yi drove off quickly.
It wasn't until he was out of sight that Wu Yunyun withdrew her gaze.
At Gu Si Yi's house, everything belonged to him; she had only brought back the keys to her apartment.
She opened the door to her apartment, and her roommate, Xiao Xiao, was in the kitchen cooking. Hearing the noise, she peeked out and exclaimed, "You're back!"
"Mm." Wu Yunyun smiled at her and went inside.
As she closed the door, she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. The reflection showed someone with dull eyes, as if all her vitality had been drained away.
She looked completely different from how she had imagined herself six months ago.
She pinched her face, trying to force a smile. The corners of her lips lifted awkwardly, more like a proclamation that she was the failure in this relationship.
