In the six months that Wu Yunyun had been with Gu Si Yi, Wu's Mother frequently urged her to find a boyfriend. Yunyun had managed to refuse with various excuses each time. Seeing many of her peers becoming grandparents only added to Wu's Mother's anxiety, and she felt increasingly impatient.
Wu's Mother understood that Yunyun's reluctance to enter marriage stemmed largely from her own failed marriage. If Yunyun chose not to marry, who would take care of her in her old age? With the meager income she earned, she wouldn't even be able to afford a caregiver. Moreover, there was no one as trustworthy as family to rely on for care. Yunyun was simply too young to grasp these realities.
Determined, Wu's Mother took matters into her own hands and signed Yunyun up on a matchmaking website. After much searching, she finally found a suitable match: a stable, age-appropriate man. Cleverly, Wu's Mother concocted a lie to trick Yunyun into attending the blind date.
The meeting was set at a high-end Western restaurant located on the top floor of a shopping mall in Teikyo. Upon arriving at the restaurant, Yunyun realized the true reason for her presence there. She was not at all prepared to face another romantic relationship!
“Mom, how could you make such a decision for me without my consent? This is my life! I should have the right to live it as I choose; you have no authority to interfere!” Yunyun exclaimed angrily, storming out of the restaurant and confronting Wu's Mother in the hallway.
“Yunyun, I'm only doing this for your own good! You're almost thirty now! Once a woman passes eighteen, her value starts to diminish. Just look around at this matchmaking scene—most of the remaining candidates are older men. Do you really want to marry an older man?” Wu's Mother pleaded.
“Mom, I really don’t want to go on blind dates! You didn’t even discuss this with me beforehand; you just made the decision for me! I’m seventeen now; can’t you let me make my own choices?” Yunyun retorted.
“Yunyun, you may think you're independent now, but don’t forget that you grew up eating my food! And now you want to dictate your own life? Let me tell you this: as long as I’m still around, you have no right to say such things!” Wu's Mother shot back.
Yunyun clenched her phone tightly and weakly replied, “I understand.”
She struggled to catch her breath and coughed a couple of times, which caught Wu's Mother's attention. Just as Wu's Mother was about to ask what was wrong, Yunyun hung up the phone.
Quickly pulling out some tissue from her bag, Yunyun coughed for a while before finally calming down. Wu's Mother sent her a photo of the match without saying another word.
After taking some time to compose herself, Yunyun entered the restaurant again and spotted him at the table. She sat down across from him.
The man extended his hand and said, “Hello, I’m Zhang Yu. I work at a research institute.”

Wu Yunyun extended her hand and shook his.
"You don't look so well. Is something wrong?"
"It's nothing, really. I caught a bit of a cough from the wind a couple of nights ago," Wu Yunyun replied.
"I see. How about we go to the hospital first? You look like you could use it."
"No need, Mr. Zhang. I'm fine," Wu Yunyun said, taking a sip of water. "Thank you for your concern."
"Honestly, I think you have a pretty good vibe. I've been on many blind dates before, but none were successful. I was starting to wonder if there was something wrong with me."
"How could that be? Mr. Zhang, you're quite charming yourself. It's just that these things really depend on fate."
"Then, Ms. Wu, would you be willing to give it a try with me?"
Wu Yunyun felt uncomfortable under his intense gaze. "Isn't this a bit too direct for just having met?"
"I'm sorry, but I was called here by my mother at the last minute. I wasn't prepared for a blind date," Wu Yunyun took a deep breath and explained.
Zhang Yu's expression changed immediately. "So you came here just to watch me make a fool of myself? Do you have any idea how precious an adult's time is? You've wasted my whole morning!"
"I'm sorry," Wu Yunyun didn't expect him to turn so quickly and felt overwhelmed.
"Don't bother saying sorry! I'm going to file a complaint against you!" Zhang Yu said angrily as he grabbed his briefcase and left.
Wu Yunyun felt the stares from all around her as she picked up her bag and left her seat.
