At three o'clock in the afternoon, rain began to fall in Dijing City.
The number of customers in the coffee shop gradually dwindled. Wu Yunyun was tidying up, occasionally glancing towards the door. The rain intensified, pooling on the streets. She messaged Gu Si Yi, telling him not to come over yet because it was pouring too heavily. Gu Si Yi replied, assuring her not to worry.
At five forty, Gu Si Yi's car pulled up in front of the coffee shop. Over the past six months, due to decent sales, Wu Yunyun had hired two additional staff members, allowing her to leave right on time.
Gu Si Yi arrived dressed in a tailored suit, holding a black umbrella. As he reached the entrance, he closed the umbrella. The young staff member inside, who had been dozing off, perked up at the sight of him.
Wu Yunyun approached him, noticing his shoulders dampened by the rain. It would be a lie to say she wasn't concerned; after all, she had told him not to come. Was she worried now? Wu Yunyun reminded herself not to be soft-hearted; this was just the beginning.
Their intimate interaction went unnoticed by the staff, who couldn't help but stare in surprise. Were they really being so affectionate behind their backs?
Wu Yunyun told the two employees they could leave early since it was raining heavily and took Gu Si Yi's hand as they stepped outside. He opened the umbrella and tilted it toward her.
Once inside the car, Wu Yunyun held Gu Si Yi's hand again; it was quite cold. He handed her a blanket from the back seat. "Put this on for now; I'll make you some ginger tea with brown sugar tonight."
Wrapping herself in the blanket, she planted a kiss on his cheek and said softly, "Thank you."
"You're such a little fool," Gu Si Yi teased gently as he playfully tapped her nose. "Let's go home."
Home—together.
Once inside their home, Wu Yunyun immediately headed to the kitchen. She found some scallions in the fridge and decided to make scallion egg noodles. She prepared two bowls, serving herself first before scooping another portion into the pot.
She intended to add everything in, but in the end, only half was placed in. She poured the remaining bowl and set it on the table.
Gu Si Yi's reaction to the noodles was different from what Wu Yunyun had imagined; he didn't frown but calmly finished the bowl, even drinking the broth.
"Delicious, Wu Yunyun. Thank you for the noodles."
"Gu Si Yi, do you have a performative personality?" Wu Yunyun asked, surprised by his unexpectedly pleasant demeanor.
It's not quite a performative personality; I just want to win you over. Only by winning you over can I ensure that you won't think about leaving.
"Wu Yunyun, I can't accept holding your hand. As long as you stay with me, I can keep eating these noodles until you're satisfied."
"Why do you have to be like this?" Wu Yunyun still didn't understand; she felt she had nothing appealing about her. In fact, she thought she was less attractive than when she was younger.
"I want to be with you." Wu Yunyun, I know you've experienced abandonment, which has left you feeling insecure. But don't worry; I will slowly stay by your side until you completely open your heart to me.
After holding your hand, I often dream of those days we spent together. To be honest, that was the only time in many years that I felt truly happy. It's just that I've lost the girl who once filled my heart.
"Don't say any more." Wu Yunyun covered his mouth. Her eyes brimmed with tears as she began to realize something: that high and mighty girl from middle school seemed to have been pulled down from her pedestal by her.
