During the National Day holiday, Wu Yunyun suddenly had the idea of taking Gu Si Yi to see her university. Her university was located in a small city about four hundred kilometers away from Yun Cheng, called Li Xia. The food here was quite similar to that of Yun Cheng, though the prices were slightly higher.
Gu Si Yi initially wanted to fly there, but Wu Yunyun preferred taking the high-speed train. So, they bought business class tickets for the train and set off on their journey to Li Xia. On the way, Wu Yunyun shared with Gu Si Yi how delicious the snacks were at her school gate and searched for a few attractions to show him.
Gu Si Yi wasn’t particularly interested in those attractions; he just wanted to see the place where she had lived. He had already experienced the climate in Yun Cheng, which was vastly different from Teikyo. He felt happy thinking about how she had lived in this city during her high school years, making him feel a sense of connection to it.
By the time Wu Yunyun and Gu Si Yi arrived, it was already afternoon. The weather was not much different from what she had imagined; it was drizzling lightly. Because it often rained in this area, she used to carry an umbrella in her backpack every day during her university days.
After checking into their hotel, Wu Yunyun took Gu Si Yi to her university. To her surprise, there had been significant changes around the campus; the chicken feet snack she had been longing for was gone and replaced by a cake shop. Since it was a holiday, there weren’t many people at the school gate, which contrasted greatly with what she had envisioned.
Noticing her disappointment, Gu Si Yi wrapped his arm around her shoulder and said, “Come on, let’s go inside and take a look.”
“Okay.” After registering, they entered the campus. It was almost dinner time, so they headed to the cafeteria. Wu Yunyun told Gu Si Yi that she spent most of her time eating in this cafeteria.
As they entered, Gu Si Yi noticed that there were still many food stalls. Wu Yunyun asked him to sit on a bench while she went to buy food for them. In the end, she chose a plate of cold rice and a serving of five-grain fish noodles for him. She also wanted to buy Soup Dumplings, but that stall was no longer there.
When Wu Yunyun returned with the food and handed him chopsticks, she said, “Honey, the dishes here can be a bit spicy, but if you eat them often enough, you’ll find they’re quite delicious.”
“Mm.” Gu Si Yi picked up his chopsticks and tried a piece of radish; it had a sour and spicy flavor with a hint of sweetness. He took a bite of rice afterward.
After finishing his meal, he exclaimed, “The taste is indeed great; it’s just a bit spicy.”
“I told you! The third floor of this cafeteria has Spicy Hot Pot too; it’s delicious as well. If we’re still hungry after this meal, we can get some later.”
Gu Si Yi took half a serving of the cold dish and had a couple of bites of the fish noodles. He noticed that the food here had a strong flavor. Wu Yunyun also had some, but she put down her chopsticks, feeling a bit frustrated. "This fish noodle place just opened, and I came with the mindset of trying something new, thinking it would be delicious."
"It’s not," Gu Si Yi said, pulling her hand. "Let’s go check out the third floor."
"Okay." Wu Yunyun held his hand as they walked upstairs, but when they reached the third floor, they found the lights were off. Undeterred, she went to the door on the third floor, only to find it closed.
Wu Yunyun's enthusiasm waned a little more. However, Gu Si Yi comforted her, "Do you know, my dear? During those few times I was abroad, I often thought about what your university city was like. But thinking about it doesn’t change anything."
"Now that you’ve brought me here, you have no idea how happy I am. These scenes I could never have imagined are right in front of me."
She felt a bit sad, thinking that things could never go back to how they were before. Wu Yunyun lowered her head; it wasn’t just these windows that had changed.
In this familiar campus, aside from Gu Si Yi, she couldn’t find anyone else she recognized. Gu Si Yi held her tightly. "I don’t want to go back to the past because my college life didn’t have you in it."
Wu Yunyun felt completely comforted by him. She stood on her tiptoes and kissed him. "You’re so wonderful, my husband."
"Let’s go finish exploring." Gu Si Yi took her hand as they went downstairs and out of the cafeteria.
As the rain grew heavier, Gu Si Yi opened an umbrella for them. They walked along the path and made their way around the school.
At each spot, Wu Yunyun shared fun memories she had from those places. For the first time, she deeply realized that certain memories in her mind were automatically linked to specific locations.
Afterward, they spent a few more days exploring the city together. Wu Yunyun thought that she probably wouldn’t often reminisce about her university days anymore.
With him by her side during this visit, she felt fulfilled.
