Lu Ye Ye knew that Lu Xiaoqi was dating and wanted him to bring her in front of him. Lu Xiaoqi asked Tian Mei for her thoughts on the matter. Tian Mei agreed, feeling that since it was the old man's wish, she had no reason to refuse.
On the day she was to meet Lu Ye Ye, she dressed appropriately and looked quite demure. In the hospital room, when Lu Ye Ye saw her, he took her hand and held it together with Lu Xiaoqi's, saying earnestly, "I entrust my grandson to you."
Tian Mei looked at the old man's serious face and then turned to see Lu Xiaoqi, whose eyes were now glistening with tears. She smiled at Lu Ye Ye and nodded in acknowledgment.
After leaving the hospital, Lu Xiaoqi told her, "Grandpa is getting old; don’t take his words too seriously." He was concerned that she might feel burdened by his grandfather's expectations.
"Okay," Tian Mei replied. She understood that Lu Ye Ye meant well, but she had become disillusioned with relationships and never dared to hope for a future.
As they got into Lu Xiaoqi's car, the two of them fell into a silence that lasted throughout the ride. Soon after, Lu Xiaoqi would be going on a business trip to Yu Jiang for a month. During his absence, Tian Mei suddenly realized that her life had changed without her noticing.
On weekends, she found herself looking forward to seeing him because he always brought her a vibrant bouquet of flowers each time they met. She was becoming somewhat unaccustomed to solitude. However, she couldn’t quite discern whether his gestures were out of genuine affection or merely a reflection of his gentlemanly demeanor.
She could never see through him completely and found herself puzzled; eventually, she decided not to dwell on it any longer.
The two had been together for a year, and during this time, aside from their moments in bed, they interacted like people wearing masks—polite yet distant. Sometimes when Lu Xiaoqi held her close, he couldn’t help but wonder what she truly thought. He had never seen that kind of passionate affection reflected in her eyes.
It felt as though they were familiar with each other yet separated by an emotional chasm. He was waiting for her to take the first step because he had witnessed her spirited side before and felt unwilling to let go of that hope.
He didn't want to admit that he had lost his charm in her eyes. But more often than not, all he received from her was indifference.
Lu Xiaoqi, filled with questions, sought out Gu Si Yi. Only he had the experience of success in such matters. A single remark from Gu Si Yi jolted him awake: "If you haven't opened your heart, how can you expect others to speak first?"
After hearing this, Lu Xiaoqi felt goosebumps rise on his arms. Reflecting on the year spent with her, he realized he had always maintained a calm demeanor, seemingly unperturbed. Perhaps he didn’t even realize that he had been waiting for her to take the first step; only then could he seize the initiative in their relationship.
Coming to this realization, he went straight to Tian Mei. When she opened the door, she greeted him with a passionate kiss. After a long embrace, his hands lingered on her waist as their noses touched, whispering softly, "I missed you."
Tian Mei patted his back and asked, "Is something wrong?"
"No, I just missed you." Lu Xiaoqi tightened his hold on her. "Can I move in with you?"
Tian Mei looked at him curiously. Until now, there had been an unspoken understanding between them, and they had maintained a respectful distance. "It's been a year. Can I get closer to you?"
Her heart raced at his words, but seeing his earnest and pitiful expression made it hard for her to refuse. "Alright, you can come over, but just so you know, you'll be staying in the guest room."
"Okay, my dear." Lu Xiaoqi lifted her up and set her down in front of the sofa, letting her nestle into his embrace.
Though it felt a bit late to say these things, he assured her that this decision wasn’t made on a whim. "I really like being with you."
"Then why choose now to say it?"
"I talked to Gu Si Yi for some advice; he inspired me. After being with you, I've started to think about marriage for the first time. Honestly, I really enjoy being with you; this attraction is lasting."
Tian Mei frowned; she hadn’t given him any signals at all. Did he actually prefer indifference? "Do you have a masochistic tendency?"
"What do you mean?" Lu Xiaoqi tightened his grip around her waist.
I feel like I haven't done much at all. Why have I attracted you?
Lu Xiaoqi was silent for a moment before replying, "It has nothing to do with being mistreated."
"You haven't done nothing. You don't realize that every time I give you flowers, you always act like a little woman. And after everything, you cling tightly to my robe and snuggle up to me while sleeping. Many times, I feel like you rely on me quite a bit, but more often than not, I think it's just my illusion."
"So, I've been strung along by you, feeling up and down every day. Now, I'm completely under your spell."
After saying this, it was Tian Mei's turn to be speechless.
She hadn't expected Lu Xiaoqi to read so much into it. The reason she slept close to him was simply that he was warmer. And every time he brought her flowers, she was genuinely happy.
Did her happiness mean she was acting like a little woman?
"Lu Xiaoqi, I must clarify that I have no intention of fishing for you."
Seeing her serious expression, Lu Xiaoqi pinched her cheek and realized it was he who had taken the bait.
In the days that followed, Lu Xiaoqi pursued Tian Mei as if he had unlocked some hidden potential within himself.
The process was grand; all of Tian Mei's colleagues knew that Lu Zong liked her. In fact, many came to inquire when she would get married.
Tian Mei continued at her own pace.
One ordinary day, she returned home and opened the door to find Lu Xiaoqi had placed her slippers at the entrance. "Welcome back, darling. I've made your favorite seafood porridge for dinner, and the fruits are peeled and ready on the coffee table. You can have some to fill your stomach first."
"Thank you, Lu Shao." Tian Mei smiled as she changed into her slippers. She had heard on the news that he had acquired a piece of land in the city center worth fifty million.
But in the evening, he wore an apron and took care of her needs.
With a sudden thought, she instinctively said, "Lu Xiaoqi, let's go get our marriage certificate."
Upon hearing this, Lu Xiaoqi paused for a moment before pulling her tightly into his embrace. He replied, "Okay."
He didn't care whether it was customary for the man to propose; he only knew that she wasn't one to take action.
This opportunity was truly rare.
