I was momentarily stunned. When he was being taken away by the police, he shook his head at me, signaling me not to make any moves. I glanced at Wang Meng standing at the door along with several waitstaff. I saw Wang Meng looking through his wallet, and many of the waitstaff noticed me but didn’t react.
I didn’t expose myself.
Then he was taken away by the police, and I was filled with dread. What on earth had happened? This didn’t seem like a case of Wang Meng discovering his keys were missing. If he had found out that his keys were gone and subsequently realized that his ledger was missing, he wouldn’t have called the police; instead, he would have confronted him about stealing the ledger!
After he was taken away, I returned to Tianchi and learned from Xiao Yi what had transpired. He had actually stolen Wang Meng's wallet!
Wang Meng returned to his office and immediately noticed that his wallet was missing! He stopped him just as he was about to leave and searched him, finding the wallet on him! After all, he was a guest, so Wang Meng didn’t do anything drastic; that would have caused some repercussions. Instead, he called the police, which was nearby, and within two minutes, he was taken away.
Damn it!
I didn’t have the heart to lament how well he had pulled off this thievery; it was just so foolish! Why steal a wallet? How much cash could possibly be in there?
I felt utterly speechless. After inquiring further, I found out that Wang Meng’s wallet contained over four thousand in cash!
This left me bewildered. Having attended a police academy, I knew how thieves were judged; three thousand three hundred yuan is a threshold—anything over that could lead to around a year of imprisonment!
And Wang Meng, come on! It’s the era of credit cards; why carry so much cash?
I felt an immense sense of frustration but had to pretend to continue working. After all, he had gotten into this mess while trying to help me. Although stealing the wallet was his own decision, it made me feel quite guilty.
After work, I secretly took the ledger home. Wang Meng probably hadn’t realized it was missing yet. Tomorrow when he comes to settle the bill for the beer delivery, he would definitely notice it’s gone. At that point, I could see if he would make a fuss about it.
My mood wasn’t as light as it had been earlier.
When I got home, Linna was delighted to see me with the ledger. She took a quick look at it and shared my view: this ledger wasn’t enough to get the general manager fired but was sufficient to threaten Wang Meng. With this leverage over him, I could potentially secure a supervisory position.
I merely acknowledged her with a grunt. Linna noticed my unhappiness and asked what was wrong. With a sigh of resignation, I recounted what had happened with him.
After listening, Linna remained indifferent and said, “You’ve been to police academy; you know that his guilt is already established now that the amount has been confirmed. There’s nothing we can do to help him.”
“Yeah,” I replied quietly. It seemed she understood my guilt towards him; hence her words were true—there wasn’t much I could do for him in this regard.
Then Linna continued, “Is there any other way you might be able to assist him?”
He has an elderly grandmother at home who relies on him; I’d like you to check on her tomorrow and let her know that he has some matters to attend to and won’t be able to return home for a while.
I told Linna that his grandmother is over seventy years old and they live together. The elderly need care; it wouldn’t be right for her to be alone at her age. Since I had work and no time for this task, I had no choice but to ask Linna to handle it.
She didn’t refuse and said she would definitely look after the grandmother. I nodded in agreement but felt it necessary to visit him tonight so that he wouldn’t worry about his grandmother.
I made a decision and handed the ledger over to Linna for safekeeping before heading to the police station. In truth, this was a risky move, but I wasn't particularly afraid. I had already sent the ledger home, so even if Wang Meng caught me, what could he really do?
Thieves aren't considered serious criminals, and it didn't take long for me to meet with my friend. Once we were together, I couldn't help but scold him. "Why did you steal a wallet? What were you thinking?"
"Alright, alright, enough of that! I just saw how badly they beat you and thought I'd help you out with some medical expenses. If I get caught, it's just bad luck; I'll take it!"
He waved his hand dismissively, showing signs of impatience. I sighed helplessly and lit a cigarette, taking a deep drag. At this point, there was really nothing more to say.
"Brother, no matter what, you came in here because of me. It's my fault for putting you in this situation. You don't need to worry about it; I've got it covered."
I took another puff of my cigarette and said simply that actions speak louder than words. My friend chuckled and replied, "You think you can just ignore it? Do you dare?"
"Haha." I laughed. Even in this situation, he still liked to joke around. It made sense; since there was no way to change things now, why not face it with a smile? Who are we trying to impress with our misery?
We chatted for a while longer. I told him that Wang Meng might come looking for him tomorrow. He said he suspected as much and then asked what exactly I had stolen—was it valuable?
"It's just a notebook," I replied. He nodded and reassured me that he wouldn't say anything. If he did, it would only worsen his own situation.
Then he asked about the girlfriend I had rented. I chuckled and said my mom had found out; the rental period was over. He laughed but was about to say something else when the police notified me that it was getting late—I needed to leave.
I bid farewell to my friend and returned home. When I got there, Linna had prepared a sumptuous dinner for me. It was clear she had ordered takeout; she knew my mood today and didn't want to torture me with her usual terrible cooking.
Linna seemed to be overthinking things—who were we trying to impress with our woes?
Sighing deeply, I said dramatically, "You have no idea how terrible I'm feeling right now." Upon hearing this, Linna pouted her lips slightly in concern and sat beside me.
"I know you're upset because your brother is in jail for helping you. But once he's out, everything will be fine again. We'll make it up to him double."
I smiled at her optimism and replied, "Of course! But right now... it's just not okay. My heart feels heavy; if only someone could kiss me, maybe that would ease my burden."
"Ugh! You can't change your nature! You lecher!" Linna shot back before getting up and heading back into her room. I noticed her cheeks redden as she left.
I chuckled softly and picked up my bowl to start eating. When others show concern for me, it makes me happy; however, I don't want those who care about me to worry too much. This way of reassuring them that I'm fine is simple yet effective—and it helps keep things light-hearted.
The next day at work in Tianchi, Xiao Yi and I were both being bullied by everyone around us. Among all the workers at Tianchi, we were the ones doing the most labor from start to finish without much downtime.
That was how things usually were for Xiao Yi; as for me, having offended Wang Meng a couple of days ago meant that everyone—from the waitstaff to Supervisor Li Jian—was giving me cold glares and constant reprimands.
I treated their disdain like dog barks—let them strut around while they could. Once I took down Wang Meng and sat in Li Jian's position, I'd love to see how cocky they would be then!
When the delivery truck arrived in the afternoon with beer, Xiao Yi and I were mopping the floor when we were forced to stop our work to help move the crates of beer. At that moment, I began observing everything around me closely.
The woman who delivered the beer usually took the receipts upstairs for reimbursement. As she passed by me, she recognized me and let out a cold snort. This caught the attention of Supervisor Li Jian, who immediately kicked me and urged me to hurry up and move!
What could I say? Li Jian was just trying to impress that woman. Sure enough, she smiled at him and flirted a bit, and he responded in kind. Then she took her receipts and went upstairs.
Half an hour later, most of the beer had been moved, but the woman still hadn’t come back down. I figured it was the same old story; with Li Jian acting like that, she was probably putting on an even more charming show for Wang Meng.
An hour later, the woman returned, still looking flirtatious, showing no signs of anything unusual having happened. Shortly after, Wang Meng came out, looking anxious. He realized that the account book was missing! He called a few people and rushed to the police station. Many people asked him what had happened, but Wang Meng didn’t say a word.
Seeing this situation made me smile; things were unfolding just as I had guessed. Once he got to the police station, there wasn’t much he could do. I was just waiting to see what state he would be in when he returned. If he came back too scared to speak up, I could start executing my next plan.
