Yama's Hall was as quiet as ever. King Qin Guang must have taken Judge Cui out for a night of revelry.
I could tell just by thinking about it with my toes. Fan Wu Jiu, well, he was off at work.
Tears streamed down my face as I lamented, why wasn't there an official of higher rank to come and fetch me?
Xie Bian dismissed the other little ghosts and patted my head, saying helplessly, "Why do you look so dazed?"
I turned to show him my heartbroken face and pretended to be aggrieved, saying, "King Qin Guang, Judge Cui, and Fan Wu Jiu aren’t coming to get me..."
Xie Bian was speechless, rubbing his forehead with a look that said he had no idea what to do with me.
I felt like I had forgotten something very important. After pondering for a moment, I asked Xie Bian, "How are things on the earthly realm going?"
Xie Bian's expression was calm as he replied methodically, "I sent Wu Jiu to handle it. He also took Di Ting back with him."
Upon hearing this, I suddenly remembered that my little Di Ting hadn’t returned yet.
Before coming to the earthly realm, Xie Bian had gallantly gone to Cuiyun Palace and boldly brought Di Ting out. He looked incredibly handsome doing so as he said to Ksitigarbha, "Bodhisattva, I'm borrowing Di Ting for A Mei."
When Ksitigarbha heard this, he slammed his hand on the table in anger, his brows furrowing. Just as he was about to unleash his wrath, he turned and saw my tearful and pitiful expression. All his anger instantly deflated in his chest; he could only wave his hand helplessly, his peach blossom eyes filled with reluctance and sorrow, as if veiled in a layer of mist.
After a long while, I heard Ksitigarbha behind me groaning in anguish as if he were about to cry: "You must take good care of it—"
Xie Bian understood me well. A smile spread across my face as I cheekily said, "If Ksitigarbha wants to kill me, you have to stop him!"
"Compared to wanting Di Ting back, he’d rather kill you," Xie Bian teased with a slight smirk.
I immediately clung to Xie Bian's neck like a koala, giving him a loud kiss and playfully saying, "Bian is the best!"
The weather that day was exceptionally clear, with bright sunshine and a gentle breeze.
Xie Bian and Ox-Head A Bang had just had a fight, and after coming out of Difu, they aimlessly floated in the air.
Xie Bian had the appearance of a cold-faced scholar, serious and meticulous in his work.
However, his flaws were truly troublesome; he was petty, loved to fight, cared too much about face, was protective of his own interests, and held grudges... Each of these traits made it difficult for the people of Difu to deal with him.
Xie Bian drifted lazily over the capital of the Ruian Dynasty, then wobbled toward the outskirts. He floated slowly along a cliff.
Suddenly, while flying, Xie Bian felt his body sink sharply as if it had become much heavier.
Startled, he instinctively looked down and nearly fell from the sky in shock.
He saw that his snow-white robe was tightly grasped by a delicate hand. Following that hand, he was surprised to find a tear-streaked girl hanging beneath him, her eyes wide with excitement and joy.
"Young hero, please stop!" the girl shouted at the top of her lungs.
Xie Bian's expression darkened instantly. He found a stable spot to land slowly. Once on solid ground, he stared intently at the girl, scrutinizing her for a long time before asking, "What are you doing here?"
The girl's legs went weak, and she collapsed to the ground. Yet one hand still clung tightly to Xie Bian's robe while she casually wiped away her tears with the other. She lifted her head and flashed him an incredibly bright smile.
The suddenness of her smile startled Xie Bian so much that he almost lost his balance and fell as well.
"I'm sorry, young hero! I got too caught up in my emotions just now and couldn't recover. Thank you so much for saving my life!" the girl said cheerfully.
Xie Bian felt a surge of anger rise within him, almost making him want to leap up and hit someone. But then he thought about it; if he were to strike this girl and the people from Difu found out, he couldn't imagine how they would twist the story.
With that thought, he forced himself to suppress his fury, taking a deep breath and reminding himself to stay calm and composed.
"Let go," Xie Bian said coldly, his voice low and steady.
"I won't let go," the girl replied stubbornly, clutching his robe like a child throwing a tantrum.
"If you don't let go, I'll kill you," Xie Bian's tone grew even colder, a hint of threat glimmering in his eyes.
"Please spare me, young hero!" The girl immediately switched to a pitiful expression, raising her delicate fingers in a mock display of fear.
Xie Bian trembled with rage, shaking his clothes vigorously in an attempt to free himself from her grip. He then floated expressionlessly toward the direction of Difu.
Seeing this, the girl became even more excited. She reached out with her other hand and tightly grasped Xie Bian once more.
This time, Xie Bian lost his balance and nearly fell to the ground.
"Young hero! What great skills!" she exclaimed joyfully, holding onto him with both hands.
Xie Bian inwardly lamented his fate, feeling as though he had encountered an adversary he would never be able to shake off in this lifetime.
