A glowing plum blossom scar was prominently displayed at the base of his right hand. Xu Rong raised his gun and aimed, "So it was you pulling the strings behind the scenes?" 0

Professor Lin chuckled, "Pulling strings? No, we are evolving." He pressed a button on the control panel, and the liquid in the Cultivation Pod began to drain. "The human body is too fragile; we need a more powerful vessel. The children you see here are perfect specimens." 0

As the liquid level dropped, Xu Rong caught sight of what lay within the Cultivation Pod. The floating bodies were covered in fine scales, their eyes devoid of pupils, only a blank white. The most horrifying aspect was their mouths, filled with rows of backward-facing teeth. 0

"The first generation was too crude," Professor Lin said, stroking the glass of the Cultivation Pod. "It could only produce inferior products like the Boss Lady. But now..." His eyes gleamed with fervor behind the blast-proof glass. "We have found the perfect formula. Through genetic modification and neuropeptide transplantation, these children can not only inherit the memories of those consumed but also acquire their skills." 0

Xu Rong's stomach churned. He recalled the boy on the playground devouring Crispy Pork Skin, his agile movements and unusually sharp senses... all derived from the abilities of those who had been consumed. 0

Suddenly, alarms blared throughout the laboratory. Professor Lin's expression changed dramatically. "Damn it! They've activated the Feast early!" He frantically pressed buttons on the control panel, but cracks were already forming in the glass of the Cultivation Pod. 0

"Run!" Professor Lin shouted at Xu Rong. "They're waking up!" 0

Before he could finish speaking, the glass of the Cultivation Pod shattered with a deafening crash, and a foul-smelling liquid gushed out. Xu Rong turned and fled as piercing screams erupted behind him. 0

As he raced up the stairs, he heard Professor Lin's agonized cries. A glance over his shoulder revealed a dripping figure hunched over Professor Lin, its sharp teeth tearing into his throat. The figure lifted its head, its pale eyes locking onto Xu Rong, blood and flesh hanging from its lips. 0

It was the Braided Girl. 0

Xu Rong stumbled onto the ground, the lenses of his gas mask smeared with blood and mucus. Behind him, a chorus of piercing shrieks echoed, like countless rusty saws grinding against metal. He fumbled for his walkie-talkie, only to find that the signal was blocked by some intense interference. 0

Under the moonlight, the schoolyard was deserted, yet the air was thick with the stench of blood. Xu Rong's boots squelched on the slick ground, each step splattering dark red liquid. He noticed scratch marks covering the outer walls of the teaching building, some extending all the way up to the third floor. 0

Suddenly, a shrill bell rang out, slicing through the night. It was the school’s dismissal bell, but its chime felt particularly eerie at this hour. The sound seemed to trigger something, as rustling noises emerged from all directions. 0

Xu Rong ducked into a classroom and peered through the window, witnessing a chilling scene unfold. Groups of "children" poured out from every corner; their movements were no longer human but twisted and crawling like some kind of arthropod. The moonlight illuminated their pale skin, reflecting a sheen reminiscent of fine scales. 0

Most terrifying of all were their eyes, glowing with a ghostly green light in the darkness, like countless will-o'-the-wisps drifting across the playground. "They are... evolving," Xu Rong recalled Professor Lin's last words and suddenly understood what was happening. 0
