The pink suit still carried the scent of Love Flower as Lu Jin took it off, and a Purple Box fell from its pocket. Surprised, excited, and thrilled, Lu Jin opened it, finally ready to leave. He smiled, but the smile faded within seconds, turning stiff.
Inside the purple box, instead of a ring, there were only a few Love Flower seeds.
Feeling dejected, Lu Jin wanted to toss the seeds away, but something inside him held him back. The Love Flower, a symbol of love, was a testament to his relationship with Xiao Ya. He turned and walked to the garden; though the garden had vanished, the Love Flowers still bloomed with their pink petals.
Kneeling down, Lu Jin gently cleared the soil and buried the seeds at the base of the Love Flower. As the fragrance wafted through the air, darkness crept closer in the distance.
Lu Jin felt a profound fear emanating from that darkness; he closed his eyes when suddenly someone took his hand. Opening his eyes, he saw her—Xiao Ya—and also Fang Xia. He watched as Xiao Ya and Fang Xia gradually merged into one person, smiling at him. The Love Flower suddenly grew larger, revealing a deep hole in its bud—a bottomless black void that resembled a place of eternal slumber. The merging of Xiao Ya and Fang Xia hid within the flower as Lu Jin recalled Xiao Ya's words: “We will always be together, never to part.”
In that moment as Lu Jin fell into the Love Flower, he caught a glimpse of Puppet Man standing beside it, quietly watching him.
The black orb of light gradually dimmed, and Puppet Man's voice was cold and eerie: “Sometimes, the bonds in your heart are harder to escape than fear itself.”
With a chilling smile, Puppet Man gently shook his leg while holding a Purple Box in his hand. He opened it to reveal a shining ring inside. Turning around, he saw Lu Jin lying heavily asleep on the sofa in his apartment. The pallor of death quickly spread across Lu Jin's face as his breathing weakened until it finally stopped.
Puppet Man gazed at him silently and extended his hand; black flames ignited on Lu Jin's body like hellish ghost fire. As the Black Fire burned away, Lu Jin's body gradually shrank…
Another night passed. I woke from a nightmare where Puppet Man's grim and dark smile seemed frozen at my lips. I lifted my head to see my reflection in the mirror; my forehead was drenched in cold sweat.
I shook my head, trying to forget those terrifying dreams. Yet Puppet Man's low voice echoed in my mind along with shattered time and that stranger's desperate expression played out like a black-and-white film. I got up; it was still early. The other two guys in my dorm were nowhere to be found—had they stayed out all night again? I didn’t have time to think about them. I turned on the faucet in the washroom; cold water flowed over my cheeks as droplets formed in my eyes, gradually coalescing into a familiar slender figure.
The door of the neighboring dorm creaked open cautiously as two shadows slipped inside. One shadow approached my bed and whispered softly, “Fang Fei, Fang Fei, wake up! Hey hey, we’ve got something good for you to eat—you’re in for a treat!”
Finding that I was not in bed, another shadow walked over and said, "Forget it, Geng Qiang, just sleep for now. We can eat when we wake up. I’m exhausted after messing around with you at the internet café all night."
"Come on, Old Demon. You dragged me into this because you’re addicted to playing on the computer, and now you’re turning it around and blaming me," Geng Qiang retorted, yawning as he turned to go to sleep. He inadvertently caught sight of a corner of a photo peeking out from my pillow. Curiously, he pulled it out and quickly stopped Old Demon, who was about to lie down, exclaiming excitedly, "Old Demon, look! It turns out Fang Fei isn’t interested in women because he has a girlfriend. Look at her; she’s quite pretty."
Old Demon glanced at it, his expression darkening. "Don’t say that. That’s Fang Fei’s ex-girlfriend, Fang Xia. They were once the envy of everyone; we old bachelors were so jealous back then. Then, out of nowhere, Cheng Yaojin appeared and took Fang Xia away. Apparently, that guy is quite wealthy, and Fang Xia broke up with Fang Fei for money. Fang Fei has been brooding over it ever since and hasn’t dated anyone in the past two years."
Suddenly lowering his voice, Old Demon said to Geng Qiang, "By the way, do you remember the female college student who committed suicide by drowning that was reported in the newspaper a couple of days ago? That was Fang Xia."
"She committed suicide? Why?" Geng Qiang stared at the photo, a chill creeping into his heart.
"Who knows? The newspaper said it was suicide. But in my opinion, even if it was suicide, it’s likely because of that man who took her away," Old Demon shook his head with a sigh before changing his tone. "Or maybe that man is the one who caused her death."
Old Demon waved his hand dismissively. "You should quickly put that photo away. Fang Fei has been gloomy ever since Fang Xia died; don’t provoke him any further." Geng Qiang hurriedly tucked the photo back under my pillow, and soon after, the dormitory was filled with their thunderous snores.
My heart tightened painfully. Fang Xia, why on earth did you choose to end your life? Or were you killed by someone? If that’s the case, I will not let the person who harmed you go unpunished.
Suddenly, a harsh scratching sound came from outside the bathroom window, and a vague shadow was cast against the glass.
"Who’s there?" I called out. There was no response. I opened the window, and in the faint morning light sat a man in a pink suit—Puppet Man—quietly at the window ledge.
