Yan Qing couldn't help but swallow hard.
Tan Ming handed him the last pack, but it was hardly enough to fill the gaps between his teeth. After finishing it, Yan Qing felt even hungrier. The snacks were gone. He glanced at the electronic wristband on his arm, which displayed the time: twelve oh four in the morning.
At that moment, a single strong thought consumed his mind: he needed to eat. Yan Qing tried to endure it, but the emptiness in his stomach was impossible to ignore. The hunger pangs came with sharp cramps and a gnawing pain in his gut—a deep, unbearable sensation that was all too clear.
"How about we go find something to eat?" Yan Qing finally said, unable to hold back any longer.
"Sure," Tan Ming replied without hesitation.
Tan Ming got up and found a backpack, stuffing it with a power bank, some medicine, tissues, and other items he deemed necessary. Once everything was ready, Tan Ming turned to Yan Qing and asked, "How's your leg?"
"It doesn't hurt anymore. As long as I don't touch it, I'm fine. This little injury is nothing compared to this unbearable hunger," Yan Qing replied.
The two of them moved aside a cabinet and slowly made their way out of the dormitory. The building was eerily quiet and pitch black, an unsettling silence enveloping them. They didn't turn on any lights for fear of attracting unwanted attention.
As they reached the entrance of the dormitory, they found that the vending machine outside had been smashed open. All the food inside had been taken, leaving only a few bottles of drinks behind. Tan Ming filled his backpack with several bottles of water while Yan Qing grabbed a bottle of sweetened beverage. He twisted off the cap and took a couple of sips, but the hunger pangs remained unrelieved.
At the entrance, the glass door had been broken open and stood ajar. The two stepped outside cautiously.
Yan Qing led the way, but as he descended the stairs, his foot suddenly landed on something soft. He slowly lifted his foot and pulled out his phone for light. What he saw made him gasp in horror: lying on the ground was half a person—one side of their body and head completely missing. He had stepped on a severed hand.
The bloody flesh glistened ominously in the dim light of night, a gruesome sight that was truly shocking. A large hand reached out in front of him, warm and gentle, covering his eyes. "Let's go."
Yan Qing took a deep breath; his voice trembled slightly as he replied, "Okay."
Despite being somewhat brave during the day, witnessing such a scene made his breathing quicken involuntarily, waves of unease washing over him.
The two of them cautiously moved forward. Yan Qing heard an extremely faint sound, like something was eerily chuckling. He immediately alerted his companion beside him, "Be careful!"
At the same time, he warily glanced behind the dormitory building, then turned around, his pupils constricting as he instinctively took a step back. Tan Ming shone the light over and saw that the greenery, which had seemed perfectly normal just this morning, had now grown several times larger. The branches were stretching out menacingly behind them, slowly advancing as if waiting to strike suddenly.
However, they had sensed it in advance. Just as they were about to get a clearer view, a tree branch suddenly shot out with incredible speed, sweeping towards them in a fierce motion. Other branches seemed to come alive as well, swaying and extending freely, creating an eerie and terrifying atmosphere.
In the pitch-black night, visibility was poor. Tan Ming and Yan Qing were swept by the branches at their legs and fell to the ground. The branch that had struck them instantly became soft, coiling around their limbs like snakes, tightly binding their hands. The tree trunk recoiled, dragging them into the forest.
The two were caught completely off guard. Long drag marks were left on the ground as they were pulled along. During the struggle, they stumbled over a stone, causing Tan Ming's phone to drop. The screen hit the ground first, illuminating the trees with its light.
