Tan Ming slung his backpack over his shoulder, and the two of them walked outside together. As they passed by a shelf of goods, Yan Qing casually grabbed a black backpack from the display, a trendy brand that had recently become popular. He told Tan Ming he was going to grab some food and quickly made his way to the deli section, stuffing the bag full with various items.
When Yan Qing returned, he found Tan Ming waiting for him, his own backpack looking equally stuffed. Did Tan Ming also get something? A big question mark popped up in Yan Qing's mind.
Suddenly, Tan Ming asked him, "Did you bring a knife?"
What knife? Yan Qing looked puzzled.
Tan Ming pulled out a brand new Water Knife, which was sold in the supermarket. Its only purpose seemed to be cutting through water, as it lacked any real sharpness. At that moment, Tan Ming couldn't help but doubt the feasibility of Yan Qing using the Water Knife to cut through branches. But if it wasn't the Water Knife, how could he explain how Yan Qing managed to break the branches?
He had forgotten about that detail. Yan Qing hadn't considered it.
Tan Ming put the knife away and revealed that he had already packed a few of them. Yan Qing took one and casually placed it in his backpack.
Once outside, the world appeared shrouded in a yellowish haze; the dust particles in the air seemed magnified several times over, visible even to the naked eye. Tan Ming pulled out two masks from his bag, putting one on himself before handing the other to Yan Qing.
After they donned their masks, they stepped out of the supermarket.
"Look!" Yan Qing exclaimed as he hurried a few steps ahead, his eyes wide with shock.
On the roadside lay the corpses from yesterday's incident. Although they didn't seem as horrifying in daylight as they did at night, each face bore an expression of agony and deep fear that was chillingly clear, sending shivers down one's spine. Moreover, after just one night, those once-vibrant bodies had shriveled significantly; it was as if their blood and flesh had been forcibly drained away, leaving only a thin layer of skin tightly clinging to their bones.
Tan Ming's expression turned serious as he approached cautiously. He bent down and picked up a stick from the ground, carefully flipping one of the shriveled corpses over. To his astonishment, he found that the back of the body was tightly connected to plant roots breaking through from the ground below. These roots had absorbed the flesh and blood, growing thick and taking on a translucent red hue that glistened ominously—an unsettling sight.
Tan Ming examined several other bodies and discovered that they all shared this same fate.
"Mutated plants can actually absorb flesh and blood," Tan Ming said with a grave expression, his feelings extremely complex. Could these truly be classified as plants? They attacked people, poisoned them, and now absorbed their life essence.
Yan Qing frowned at this revelation when suddenly his phone buzzed in his pocket. He quickly pulled it out to check; there was a new message in their class group chat. One of the class representatives had sent out an announcement: "Which students are still alive? Please reply with a '1'." Only a few responses had trickled in so far.
The class committee continued, "If anyone is still alive and their phone is dead, please let someone nearby with battery help by adding a name." This time, only two names appeared.
Yan Qing hesitated for a moment. He thought to himself, what if someone in his class was still alive? If he added a name, wouldn’t that immediately reveal his identity to those in his dorm? So, he turned off his phone.
"Why not add a name?" Tan Ming noticed everything and raised an eyebrow at him, sensing his hesitation.
Yan Qing awkwardly forced a smile and replied, "There were too many names added in the group earlier. It felt like we were on the brink of death, so I wanted to rebel just this once."
