A muffled sound echoed through the air. The people in front were startled and instinctively turned to look back. Yan Qing and Tan Ming, facing them, exchanged glances as their expressions shifted slightly. In their line of sight, the Rose at the base of the wall suddenly began to bloom.
In an instant, the wall before them was covered in climbing vines of Rose, each vine bursting with vibrant, luscious flowers. All of this happened silently.
The vines of the Rose did not attack anyone; after the people behind fell to the ground, those in front followed suit, their eyelids growing heavy as they collapsed one after another. They lay on the ground, eyes closed, their faces reflecting a state of dreamy intoxication.
The enchanting fragrance of flowers filled the air. Tan Ming paused for a moment, realizing why they had fainted—it was the scent of the flowers. The direction of plant mutations could be diverse!
Before he could finish his thought, his body suddenly fell backward. "Flowers?" Yan Qing questioned, his eyelids growing heavy as he too succumbed to unconsciousness. In that fleeting moment before they closed their eyes, the suppressive effect of the floral aroma vanished completely. The blooming Roses seemed to freeze in time, halting their blossoming all at once.
Tan Ming and Yan Qing abruptly regained consciousness, their bodies uncontrollably crashing to the ground with a heavy thud. As he landed awkwardly on his left leg, Yan Qing winced in pain.
Tan Ming scrambled to his feet and helped him up. "What just happened?" Yan Qing looked bewilderedly at the flowers before him. The people who had previously collapsed were still lying there; upon closer inspection, they had already stopped breathing.
They felt incredibly fortunate to have awakened just as their consciousness was about to be consumed. Tan Ming wondered if it was because they were users that they wouldn't die.
While he pondered this, behind them, an electrical box mounted on the back wall of the commercial street flickered as a circuit breaker tripped, causing a crackling sound to resonate throughout the campus.
In the next moment, a voice came over the campus broadcast: "Cough! Students, I am one of the presumed users identified by the system. I cannot disclose my identity, but I can tell you that I have activated the Termination Evolution Talisman. This talisman is only effective for ten hours; during these ten hours, all flora and fauna within the campus will cease to evolve. You are safe for now, so please make your way to Fountain Square and Yuanhe quickly while we still have limited time."
The broadcast repeated three times.
"Termination Evolution Talisman?"
Tan Ming and Yan Qing exchanged glances. The commercial street was over twenty minutes away from Fountain Square. After leaving the delivery station, they found a bicycle, with Tan Ming riding and Yan Qing on the back, reaching their destination in just nine minutes.
On their way, the flora and fauna had ceased to mutate, remaining still and no longer attacking people.
By the time they arrived at the square, several hundred people had already gathered, with more arriving from all directions.
A short girl, who was quite cute, was surrounded by the crowd. She held a megaphone and shouted for everyone to come forward. She was the School Broadcaster.
The crowd clustered around her, sitting on the ground of the square. The fountain in the center sprayed fine streams of water, and as more people gathered, the oppressive gloom of death began to dissipate.
The short girl repeated her call multiple times, but only one girl with long black hair stepped forward. This girl appeared very quiet, with fair skin and glasses that framed her dark eyes. She had delicate features and pursed her lips slightly as she stood beside the short girl, casting a disinterested glance at the crowd.
"Please come forward!" the girl repeated.
It was impossible for there to be only the two of them willing to help. Yet no one responded.
"Does anyone even want to break this Death System?" The girl's tone grew a bit angry.
