After dropping off several deceased and returning, I saw that the deceased was still sitting there in a daze, which made me feel puzzled.
Based on past experiences, the deceased who come here are always eager to leave as soon as possible. If they can't board a boat immediately, they would rather go back to the world and pass the time there. No one has ever been willing to patiently wait here.
Because it's really boring here.
"Have you decided how to do it?" After hesitating for a while, I couldn't help but ask him again.

"It is indeed so, that's right..." He responded nonchalantly, with a hint of melancholy. "Um, do we really have to gather the ferry fare to take the boat?"
"Well, about that..." I pondered for a moment. "Actually, there is another way to take the boat, but so far, no one has achieved it."
"Oh? What method?" he asked with considerable interest.
"As long as you stay here for a Century, you'll get a chance to take a free boat ride," I said, pointing to the beach covered in pebbles beneath us. "However, if you choose to return to the world and then come back, all the time will have to be recalculated."
"Just stay for a Century and you can ride the boat for free? That doesn't seem too difficult," he said, tilting his head in confusion. "Why doesn't anyone choose this method?"
"Because it's boring!" I waved my hand to show him the empty space around us. "Can't you see? This beach has nothing but piles of rock fragments, and this River Styx is just a dark void where you can't see anything. The hazy mist in the air obscures everything around us; there's nothing here, nothing to see." I couldn't help but sigh. "That's why those who originally planned to take it easy and stay for a Century to qualify for the free boat ride ultimately couldn't stand the desolation and solitude. They would rather take a risk and return to the living world to scavenge for supplies."
"Is that so..." After listening, he still faintly smiled. "In that case, I'll make plans when I feel bored later."

"Well, it's up to you, after all, you have plenty of time to consider. Maybe by the time the next grand event starts, you'll be bored enough to change your mind."

Looking at the smile hanging on his lips, I couldn't shake off a subtle sense of discomfort.
"...Actually, you don't have to force yourself to smile," I hesitated for a moment before finally speaking up. "There’s no need to create interpersonal relationships here, no need for false expressions or insincere pleasantries, so there's no need to suppress your emotions."
After death, the soul usually experiences a sense of liberation from worldly constraints, and emotions are often fully expressed, revealing a true loyalty to oneself.
However, the person in front of me is not like that.
"Since you're already dead, just relax a bit."
From the moment I first met him until now, he has always been overly polite. That cautious smile, as if afraid of offending anyone, makes me feel quite uncomfortable.
No matter how you put it, I'm just a simple Ferryman of the River Styx, ferrying people across for a fee. There's no point in trying to get close to me or build a relationship.
He looked stunned for a moment, his usual smile freezing on his face.
After struggling for a while, he finally managed to raise a somewhat awkward smile.
"I'm sorry, but it seems this has become my habit, and it's hard to change it in an instant... I hope you can be understanding about this."
