She had just finished her tasks, and the days of constant running around and conversations had left her looking dejected. Dark circles were heavy under her black-rimmed glasses, and there was a palpable weariness in her eyes.
As she entered, she glanced at Xin and then at the bed laid out before her, feeling a slight shock. Wang Xiaoyan seemed lost in thought; she had lost so much weight over the past few days that her cheeks were gaunt, and she too bore two large dark circles under her eyes.
"Wang Xiaoyan, have you not been resting?"
Wang Xiaoyan numbly shook her head.
"I know that Wei Yu's situation has been quite a blow to you all, but your health is equally important," Li Yan said.
Wang Xiaoyan stiffly nodded, as if obeying an order from a machine.
Li Yan informed the two of them that the school had given Wei Yu's family a substantial compensation, and her father had taken her body away. They had also identified the person who spread rumors about Wei Yu's pregnancy on the confession wall—Zhu Yihuang from their dormitory. Both the school and the police had confirmed it was her account. As for how she would be dealt with, that was a matter for the police and the court; the school had decided to suspend her for a year.
Xin's expression showed some dissatisfaction. "Just a year of suspension? Zhu Yihuang is indirectly responsible for Wei Yu's suicide!"
"Teacher, this is a life we're talking about!"
Li Yan countered, "Was Wei Yu pushed off by Zhu Yihuang?"
"No."
"Then that's that."
Currently, the school was in the midst of recruitment season and did not want this incident to escalate further as it could tarnish their reputation. Therefore, they requested both of you to keep this confidential.
Xin was confused. "Teacher, what are we supposed to keep secret? The whole school knows about Wei Yu's suicide; there are even videos online. What are we hiding?"
Li Yan's expression grew serious. "The truth behind Wei Yu's suicide!"
"This matter has already been settled privately. The school, Wei Yu's family, and the police will not make it public. However, there are many speculations surrounding it, and the school is under significant pressure. To avoid disrupting this year's recruitment efforts, they want you both to post online as Wei Yu's roommates."
"What kind of post?"
"The school wants you to guide public opinion by framing Wei Yu's death as a result of her emotional issues rather than involving Zhu Yihuang."
Xin asked, "Is it because Zhu Yihuang is Zhu Dong's daughter?"
Li Yan paused for a moment and said, "As long as you understand in your hearts, that's enough!"
The institution was once a private college called Technology Institute, operated under the Yumeng Education Group. The head of the group had previously served as a representative, but after Yumeng Group went bankrupt and was liquidated, Technology Institute was taken over by the government and transformed into a public school. This had been the case for over a decade, and it was common knowledge among university students.
Tan Ming and Yan Qing were also aware of this history.
When Zhu Dong mentioned that they wouldn't let their hard work go to waste, the research slots at Guo University had already been secured.
Xin's eyes sparkled with joy as she immediately understood what Li Yan meant. Wang Xiaoyan's thoughts drifted, her spirit seemingly absent.
After Li Yan left, laughter filled the dormitory as Xin quickly called her family to share the good news about her secured research opportunity, almost forgetting about Wei Yu's death.
Wang Xiaoyan remained silent, her gaze withdrawn. She closed her eyes.
In her dreams, her expression was one of anguish as she tightly clutched the blanket. Suddenly, she sat up and shouted, "Is it only when I die that I can be free?"
When she woke up, her face was cold and wet with tears.
Xin handed her a bottle of water and asked, "What did Lin Hao say when he came to find you on the playground? Why have you been having nightmares lately?"
Wang Xiaoyan shook her head vacantly.
She didn't take the water; Xin placed it beside her pillow. "You haven't said much in these ten days. This is really scary!"
Scary? Wang Xiaoyan seemed to be triggered by those words. She glanced at the bite marks on her hand and let out a grotesque laugh before getting out of bed without putting on her shoes and walking toward the door.
