"It doesn't matter to me at all what your identity is. The moment you revealed your trump card, we all know that our instincts are not for nothing," Qi Qiuluo said.
Tan Ming should be someone whom all the envoys, including ordinary people, would never doubt. In terms of credibility, he was even more popular than Shen Jianghuan. However, his reckless actions had destroyed some people's trust in him.
"They will eventually find out," Tan Ming remarked.
Last time, Master Ban had already begun to suspect him when he asked about the scars on his back.
Tan Ming closed his eyes, his long eyelashes gently curling. His slender hands were folded on his knees. Yan Qing looked at him and recalled the child from his memories. "Tan Ming, is your brother named Tan Chi?"
He hoped he hadn’t misremembered the child's name.
"Oh, you know that too?" Qi Qiuluo teased as he looked at the two of them.
After a long silence from Tan Ming, Yan Qing thought he wouldn’t respond, but then he simply acknowledged it with a sound.
"My brother's name is Tan Chi; his nickname is also Tan Chi."
"I’ve met your brother," Yan Qing wanted to tell him.
Tan Ming remained quiet. "Hmm."
"It was during that year when I was playing in your city. I ran into your brother on the street. He was all alone, his little face tear-streaked. I thought he had gotten lost from his parents, so I approached him to help contact his family. The kid was too clever; I couldn't get any information from him. Instead, he figured me out completely and insisted on following me back to the city. In the end, I had no choice but to take him to the police station."
"I know."
"Huh?" Yan Qing was surprised.
Tan Ming opened his eyes.
"The police station has your information and surveillance footage left behind."
"Oh." Yan Qing assumed it was like that, but it wasn't.
Tan Ming was seriously fabricating a lie.
After Tan Chi went missing, their family panicked and contacted everyone they could—buses, police stations, train stations, and bus terminals. Their driver and nanny even went out on the streets looking for him. His mother almost printed out flyers with his brother's photo to distribute on the streets.
The only person in their family who wasn’t anxious was him.
Why? Because Tan Ming knew where Tan Chi was.
Tan Ming had bought a children's watch with a built-in locator for his younger brother, Tan Chi, on Tan Chi's birthday. He had placed it in his room, but one day, Tan Chi sneaked in and took the watch for himself. From that moment on, the watch belonged to Tan Chi. When someone asked him about it, the child claimed it was a gift from his brother.
After Tan Chi left home, Tan Ming realized that he had spent the day playing outside with Yan Qing. Tan Ming followed them throughout the day until Yan Qing dropped Tan Chi off at the police station, at which point he finally stopped trailing them. Instead of retrieving his brother from the police station, he took a taxi home. He was not concerned about that bothersome child at all.
Yan Qing was curious and asked him why his brother had run away from home. The child's tone suggested he was quite unhappy. "He’s got a screw loose," Tan Ming replied. He found it hard to understand why a child would want to leave home.
He recalled that day when he was playing video games in his room when Tan Gu stormed in without even closing the door. Tan Gu was two years older than Tan Ming and was already in his first year of college at a local university, which meant he came home on weekends. The two brothers hadn’t really spoken much in over a year.
Tan Gu threw several books onto Tan Ming's desk, causing the computer keyboard to fly off onto the floor. Seeing those books—originally kept in his own room—Tan Ming immediately understood why Tan Gu was so angry. He quietly watched his older brother.
Tan Gu was about the same height as him, but they didn’t resemble each other much. Tan Ming took after their father, while Tan Gu looked like their mother, possessing delicate and handsome features that exuded a warm and refined aura, making him appear more mature and composed. However, only their family knew that Tan Gu had a bad temper.
