Those around him were either suspended by the vines of plants, ensnared by the tongues of animals, or swallowed whole before they could even react. The chaotic sounds of Mutated Flora and Fauna mixed with the cries of those in fear.
The stench of blood permeated the air, and severed limbs were scattered across the ground. Heavy shadows loomed over the people, pressing down on their hearts.
Death, which had been absent for days, surged forth at this moment, becoming all too tangible.
Tan Ming tightly grasped Yan Qing's hand, pulling him back to evade the attacks. As a massive mutated Lizard opened its gaping maw before him, Ke Jianping's pupils dilated in terror, trembling with unease.
Suddenly, a yellow dog larger than the Lizard collided with it, biting off its tongue. Ke Jianping snatched back a life from the brink of death. He looked up to see the yellow dog wrestling with the Lizard, recognizing it with a choked voice—Da Huang.
Da Huang was a stray dog that often wandered into the restaurant. Ke Jianping would feed it whenever he saw it, and over time, they became familiar. In spring, when Da Huang had a litter of puppies but was too weak to reach the restaurant, it became emaciated. Feeling pity, Ke Jianping secretly prepared a pot of bone soup for Da Huang, sneaking it to the dog every day without his wife's knowledge.
In less than a month, Da Huang had regained its strength and plumpness. Its puppies were round and adorable. However, begging for scraps at school was not easy for Da Huang. After the puppies turned one month old and could run and jump, Ke Jianping noticed that one would go missing every so often, only to find its pitiful corpse somewhere on campus later—some had ingested rat poison, others crushed under car wheels or drowned in the lake.
Eventually, there were no puppies left by Da Huang's side.
Looking at Ke Jianping, Da Huang's dark eyes sparkled with intelligence. Its eye sockets were sore as if filled with tears; yet within seconds, its gaze shifted to one of ferocity. With a snap of its jaws, it sent the fallen Lizard crashing to the ground. It glared at the humans, baring its teeth as drool dripped from its fangs onto the earth below. It barked twice at the crowd, causing the ground to tremble beneath its feet.
To everyone's surprise, Ke Jianping, usually so stoic and masculine, began to cry.
" Master Ban!” Tan Ming shouted.
“ Master Ban!” he called again. “Protective umbrella!”
The Messengers watched anxiously as they feared that something might go wrong with his Messenger Gear. The crowd's breaths grew shallow.
In the next moment, they found themselves unprotected as all those attacking plants and animals were instantly teleported into the restaurant under the shield of the protective umbrella.
Meanwhile, they themselves were moved out.
Everyone stood in confusion as those animals screamed at them through the transparent barrier but could not break through; they could not enter either.
Zhang Liu wiped his face, thinking that this might just work. At least they were safe for the time being. Just as that thought crossed his mind, a root sprang up from the ground like a whip, causing the crowd to surge forward in panic.
"Head to Fountain Square!" Tan Ming shouted.
The Mutated Flora and Fauna were trapped inside the restaurant, but the Mutated Plants outside could still attack people, posing a significant danger! Fountain Square was relatively open and less densely vegetated.
Yan Qing broke free from Tan Ming's grip and dashed to the front. "Follow me!" he shouted, racing ahead like a gust of wind. He had been chased out before and knew that there were fewer Mutated Plants in that area.
At that moment, having a guide brought everyone some reassurance. They all picked up their pace and followed him.
Leading the group, Yan Qing chose a relatively safe route and brought everyone to Fountain Square. On their way, they encountered a Mutated Willow, and Yan Qing quickly halted.
Everyone held their breath as Qi Qiuluo noticed the trembling branches of the willow tree.
Tan Ming assessed the situation and waved his hand decisively. "Dig it up!"
Everyone rolled up their sleeves and joined forces to uproot the tree, twisting its roots apart as they worked together.
