As he spoke, nearly eighty or ninety people settled back down. At the beginning of the activation, Shen Jianghuan had not gathered everyone at Fountain Square, and they had all experienced a night of thrilling escape from the campus. Just thinking about the mutated plants within the school made their scalps tingle. Rather than risking a search for food, it was better to wait here.
It would be great if Tan Ming and his group could bring back food; if not, they would all go hungry together. Dying of hunger was certainly more dignified than being cut in half by the plants. Tan Ming instructed the group to let Li Jianping take ten people to gather firewood nearby, strictly advising them not to venture into the forest or approach large trees, but to stick to the weeds and unmutated trees around Fountain Square.
The other twenty or so people followed Tan Ming. Fan Xiaonan wanted to join as well, but Tan Ming insisted he stay behind to watch over everyone. Master Ban sat alone, looking sullen, worried that he might go looking for Lao Ji. Ling Xing remained silent, occasionally wiping tears from his face and pulling out his phone to look at Liu Xuanzhu's pictures, still trapped in his grief and fearing he might do something rash. Everyone needed someone to keep an eye on them.
Tan Ming had planned a route that would take them along the main road on the east side to pick up some supplies from the supermarket before turning onto Peace Road towards Agricultural College. Everyone had marked the mutated plants and animals on the school map previously. Tan Ming had sketched a simplified map based on that, noting that dangerous mutated plants included the vines in the Pavilion across from the supermarket and the Ginkgo Trees lining both sides of Peace Road, as well as a patch of Yueji near Swan Lake.
Before setting off, Tan Ming reminded Master Ban to keep track of time. When the time came, Master Ban would need to use the Messenger Tool one last time to trap the mutated animals inside the restaurant. Though his expression was displeased, Master Ban nodded in agreement.
Tan Ming glanced at Fan Xiaonan and reminded him to send updates promptly. Fan Xiaonan gestured with his hand in acknowledgment. Only then did they set off.
Tan Ming and Zhang Liu led the way at the front, while Yan Qing was initially ahead until Qi Qiuluo pulled him back to speak with him privately. Qi Qiuluo slyly hooked his arm around Yan Qing's shoulder and asked teasingly how he felt when Tan Ming kissed him.
Yan Qing shivered at the thought, glancing at those walking ahead before shooting a glare at Qi Qiuluo. He whispered back, "Don't talk nonsense! When did he ever kiss me?"
"Oh? You think we're all blind? Do you want me to remind you of when and where it happened? Tong Chengjie saw it; Tan Ming gave you leaves."
Yan Qing quickly covered Qi Qiuluo's mouth, his cheeks flushing red. Just when he had managed not to think about it, this mischievous person was bringing it up again.
"Let go of his hand," Qi Qiuluo said, "You’re done for, Yan Qing. You’ve fallen for Tan Ming."
"Don’t talk nonsense. Yan Qing doesn’t even know if he likes men; how could he possibly fall in love with someone so quickly?"
"Nonsense? I’m not buying it," Qi Qiuluo retorted. "Tell me, when Tan Ming kissed you, did you feel disgusted?"
Yan Qing paused for a moment. Well, he didn’t feel disgusted. At that time, all he could think about was that Tan Ming would never be interested in him; he hadn’t considered anything else.
Besides, Tan Ming had only kissed his cheek, just a light touch. He hadn’t had the time to dwell on it.
Qi Qiuluo insisted, "If you weren’t disgusted, then you must like him!"
"Really?" Yan Qing questioned.
"Of course! Let me ask you this: if I kissed you, would you feel disgusted?"
"I probably wouldn’t."
Hearing this, Qi Qiuluo pretended to lean in to kiss him. Yan Qing instinctively pushed him away. No, he couldn’t handle that.
His arm transformed into a wolf’s claw; Qi Qiuluo nearly sent him flying a meter away. Fortunately, Yan Qing managed to pull him back just in time.
Their commotion caught the attention of those in front of them, who turned around, thinking they were under attack.
