"What does it have to do with you?" Qi Qiuluo shot him a glance before chuckling and watching the unfolding drama.
They encountered several Mutated Plants, but Tan Ming was quick to alert them and defuse the situation.
Ahead, a patch of Dogtail Grass blocked their path. Yan Qing stepped onto the grass, and the stems quickly intertwined, weaving a net that ensnared his foot.
"Be careful," Tan Ming warned as he pulled a knife from his pocket.
"Don't," Yan Qing glanced at the knife in his hand. With a swift motion of Wolf Claw, he severed the entangling stems, freeing his foot. However, as he took another step forward, his foot was caught again.
Tan Ming looked ahead; the Dogtail Grass stretched for several meters, completely covering the path with no way around it.
"Everyone gather close," Tan Ming instructed.
They formed a back-to-back circle, but as soon as they stepped onto the Dogtail Grass, their feet became ensnared by the stems.
The stems of Dogtail Grass were several centimeters long—thin and flexible—but could be easily broken with a fingernail. However, the net they wove was resilient and could only be cut with a knife.
Everyone carried knives, but Yan Qing was the only one without one; his claws were sharper than any blade.
They moved forward step by step, cutting through the grass for over an hour. When they turned to look back, the path they had cleared was already overgrown with Dogtail Grass again, showing no signs of their passage.
The characteristics of plant mutations varied greatly; the mutation of Dogtail Grass manifested in its flexibility and rapid reproduction rate.
"This grass reproduces so quickly that in just a few days, it will cover the entire school," Zhang Liu expressed his concern.
Xu Le, lacking patience, found the expanse of grass infuriating. He cursed under his breath countless times but felt a chill at the thought of it overtaking the school.
"We don't have time to think about what will happen later," Tan Ming said firmly.
After crossing the grassy area, just a few hundred meters ahead lay the supermarket.
At the entrance grew several Monstera plants, lush and green with large, feather-like leaves. Even from a distance, they could smell a sweet fragrance. As they approached, they saw that the Monstera were laden with fruit; each piece had skin that peeled away effortlessly when touched.
"The Monstera has also mutated recently," Tan Ming noted.
Last time they had hidden in the supermarket, the Monstera at the entrance showed no signs of flowering or fruiting.
Behind him, some people were already eyeing the Monstera fruit hungrily. However, upon realizing these were mutated plants, their enthusiasm dampened significantly.
Only one person couldn't resist; too hungry to care about caution, he broke off a piece of fruit with his bare hands. As he touched it lightly, the skin peeled away in layers. He took a bite but managed to avoid the toxic part inside and felt fine afterward.
Seeing him unscathed encouraged a few others with boldness to go and pick some fruit as well.
The sap of the Monstera is toxic and corrosive; caution is advised, Tan Ming warned.
They were not particularly concerned, fearing that if they delayed, they might miss out on the opportunity. One person picked a fruit that was not fully ripe, and the sap from its base got on his hand. His hand visibly rotted and swelled up, and he clutched his wrist with his other hand, crying out in pain.
"Ugh!" Qi Qiuluo stepped back, unable to bear the sight.
Zhang Liu had burn ointment in his bag and took it out to apply to the injured hand, but it had little effect. The rotting was confined to the back of the hand; his arm and fingers were merely red and swollen, posing no life-threatening danger.
After gathering the Monstera fruits, they entered the supermarket and quickly retrieved the necessary condiments. Fan Xiaonan messaged Tan Ming to say that Ke Jianping and the others could not find any branches.
Tan Ming replied, instructing Ke Jianping to take people to cut some Dogtail Grass for firewood.
Leaving the supermarket, they turned onto Peace Road. Passing by the Pavilion, Yan Qing recalled how he had witnessed the vines inside kill a person in mere seconds last time. He felt a shiver of fear as he saw that the vines still looked like dead tree bark, though several large leaves had grown on them, bearing many gourds.
Each gourd was quite large, nearly half a person’s height, plump and green, hanging from the withered vines.
"These gourds are really something," Qi Qiuluo exclaimed.
"They grow from sucking blood and eating flesh," Yan Qing said.
Qi Qiuluo cursed under her breath.
They did not approach the Pavilion but walked along the road instead. Each of them pulled up their jacket hoods and prepared to open their umbrellas. On either side of the road were mutated Ginkgo Trees, which had swayed twice since they stepped onto this path.
