Yan Qing walked down the path and, without meaning to, glanced to the side. There, at the Pavilion, he spotted a skeletal corpse. The deceased's left hand was tucked into the left breast pocket of their clothing, and a piece of paper was partially visible inside.
It was Professor Li Yan.
He recalled the numbers written in blood beside her when he had last seen her. Now, seeing the paper in her pocket, he felt it was an important clue and quickly ran over.
"Yan Qing!" Tan Ming noticed someone running away but realized it was too late to stop him.
Yan Qing dashed forward and pulled the paper from Li Yan's pocket. As he turned to flee, withering vines pursued him closely. Just as he was about to escape the Pavilion, the vines tightened around his waist, lifting him off the ground.
The vines constricted painfully, leaving a deep purple mark on his abdomen. He remembered how another person had been cut in half by similar vines and felt a surge of panic. He struggled fiercely, using his sharp claws to slice through the vines and fell to the ground. As he landed, he instinctively grabbed a gourd that had fallen nearby, which hit him hard in the stomach, nearly causing him to vomit blood.
Yan Qing scrambled to his feet and tried to run again but almost tripped over the gourd that seemed to be targeting him. "This gourd is definitely out to get me," he thought.
Determined, he decided to embrace the gourd and took several steps out of the Pavilion. The vines' attack range was limited to the Pavilion; once he was outside, he would be safe.
Tan Ming and a few others rushed over. Yan Qing handed the gourd to Xu Le while clutching his stomach with one hand. As soon as Xu Le took it, his arm sank under its weight. "Damn it, this is heavy! Someone help me!"
Two people stepped forward to assist him, and together they placed the gourd on the ground.
Exhausted, Xu Le sat on top of the gourd and wiped sweat from his forehead. "How did you manage to carry this when you're so thin?" He looked at Yan Qing with curiosity.
Yan Qing extended his claws slightly; transforming into a wolf had indeed increased his strength, but this gourd was genuinely heavy. He felt like he might be crushed under its weight for a moment before finally feeling some relief.
Tan Ming lifted Yan Qing's outer coat and examined his shirt underneath. There were two distinct bruises encircling his waist where the vines had gripped him tightly, still marked with traces of blood—an unsettling sight.
He let go of Yan Qing's shirt. "What made you run over there? Do you have any idea how dangerous that was?" Tan Ming's voice was cold and his expression darkened.
Yan Qing pulled out the paper for Tan Ming and hurriedly explained, "I didn’t mean to! I saw something on Professor Li Yan!"
Tan Ming opened his hand sternly and said, "Yan Qing, you need to leave."
"I really didn’t do it on purpose," Yan Qing murmured softly.
Tan Ming remained unyielding. "Go now, with Qi Qiuluo."
Qi Qiuluo looked up in confusion. "What did I do wrong?"
I don't. Yan Qing is just as stubborn. He doesn't believe he did anything wrong. Isn't he doing it for everyone? Why can't Tan Ming understand him?
Alright, alright, it's not a big deal, is it? If we let Yan Qing go again, who knows where he might run off to? Qi Qiuluo's voice turned serious. Yan Qing, next time, listen.
Yan Qing didn't like to argue with others, so he nodded. Only then did the group continue on their way.
Yan Qing walked slowly, bringing up the rear, while Tan Ming led the way but didn't move too quickly, deliberately slowing his pace.
Senior, I suddenly thought, if Lao Ji is right and Master Ban is the murderer, will he not use the Messenger Tool one last time? Zhang Liu didn't finish his sentence.
Then they would be in danger.
Fan Xiaonan staying behind won't be a problem, Tan Ming said. He had already communicated with Fan Xiaonan; if Master Ban didn't use the Messenger Tool in time, Fan Xiaonan would immediately send him a message or call. As soon as Tan Ming received the message, he would initiate a vote to eliminate Master Ban and then use identity swapping to replace him in using the Messenger Tool.
Tan Ming's Messenger Tool could be used three times. The first time he replaced the Traveler and used it three times, including that time in the dormitory when it was reversed; the second time he replaced the Sheep and still had two more uses left for that; there was one more replacement left.
Master Ban only had one use of the Messenger Tool remaining. If Tan Ming replaced him, he couldn't replace anyone else again; it wasn't worth it. Wasting that opportunity on the Sheep to meet Yan Qing was even less worthwhile, but Tan Ming couldn't help himself.
Zhang Liu had complete faith in Tan Ming but had one doubt: Senior, do you think Master Ban could be the murderer?
What do you think? Tan Ming pushed the question back to him.
I don't know. Zhang Liu's gaze turned serious.
