They encountered various Mutated Plants along the way, all of which were cleverly dealt with. Inside the Agricultural College, there were experimental fields planted with vegetables, corn, wheat, and various livestock such as chickens, ducks, geese, cows, sheep, and pigs. There were also trees bearing peaches, pears, and apples. Tan Ming had previously exchanged identities with a sheep and had come out from the Agricultural College, so he was familiar with the situation here and suggested they visit.
After the system began, the evolution of plants and animals led to a certain degree of destruction at the Agricultural College. The originally orderly planting and breeding had become chaotic; the crops in the fields were severely damaged, with large patches of corn stalks lying on the ground. Non-mutated chickens and ducks wandered aimlessly in the fields, while cows and sheep grazed on the grass by the roadside without any intention of fleeing.
Everyone chased after them, trying to herd them together. They managed to catch eight chickens, seven ducks, one calf, and three pigs. However, they couldn’t take all of them; they only brought along the chickens and ducks. They also picked some corn from the experimental fields and dug up potatoes and carrots from a senior’s plot. Their backpacks were stuffed full.
The chickens and ducks flapped wildly in their hands, shedding feathers everywhere. Qi Qiuluo hid behind Yan Qing; it was amusing to see such a grown man afraid of chickens! Xu Le shrank back when a chicken squawked in his grasp, fearing he might hurt himself. Yan Qing laughed heartily at him.
While everyone else was chasing chickens, only Qi Qiuluo seemed to be running for his life at the sight of them; by the end, it was hard to tell whether he was chasing the chickens or they were chasing him.
The return journey was smoother than their arrival; the only danger was the Ginkgo nuts that occasionally fell from above on Peace Road. They bundled up tightly against potential hazards. Unfortunately, one duck that wasn’t sheltered under an umbrella got hit by a falling Ginkgo nut and died on the spot; thankfully, there were no other casualties.
As they passed by a Pavilion, Yan Qing walked carelessly and didn’t notice his feet; unexpectedly, he tripped over a gourd discarded by the roadside and fell hard, scraping his chin. He got up and kicked at it in frustration but realized too late that the gourd had dried out and turned yellow—it felt like kicking a large rock. He immediately grimaced in pain while clutching his foot.
Qi Qiuluo burst into laughter. Tan Ming wrapped an arm around Yan Qing's waist to support him and helped him sit down. After removing his shoe for inspection, he found that Yan Qing’s big toe was slightly swollen but not serious—just a reminder to be more careful next time.
The unfortunate fellow thought that since his limbs had already transformed into wolf-like strength, he could handle it; thus, he decided to carry the gourd with him. “Why bother?” Qi Qiuluo thought it was unnecessary effort.
“You wouldn’t understand,” Yan Qing replied gloomily. He wanted to take the gourd back for a good meal!
Crossing that patch of grass took longer than expected mainly because they were all carrying things; their hands holding knives were somewhat unsteady. Fortunately, Yan Qing’s Wolf Claw was sharper and faster than their knives; Xu Le envied his transformation.
By the time they reached Fountain Square, five and a half hours had passed since they set out. Master Ban used an umbrella again to trap some Mutated Animals in a restaurant upon seeing them arrive.
“They’re here! They’re here!” Fan Xiaonan clapped excitedly and nudged Ling Xingyuan’s shoulder. Ling Xingyuan shot him a sideways glare but chose not to respond further.
Master Ban leaned against a tree and opened his eyes at the sound.
The other classmates looked at them enviously as they brought food. Li Jianping noticed that they had cut down grass that was nearly as tall as a person, which had already dried out, and they had also gathered some branches to set up a fire pit.
He hesitated, "We went through the grassland to the supermarket and brought back some useful tools, but unfortunately, we couldn't find a large pot." The school supermarket didn't sell cooking utensils, but they did have lunch boxes.
"Who says we don't have one?" Tan Ming glanced at the large gourd that Yan Qing was carrying.
Li Jianping's eyes lit up, "Exactly!" He reached out to take the gourd, but Yan Qing held onto it firmly.
Li Jianping looked at Yan Qing, raising an eyebrow.
The group exchanged glances. There wasn't enough food for the four of them. Not even enough for one person. How to divide it was a problem.
"Let's discuss it," Xu Le suggested.
He trusted Tan Ming, but the food was something they had risked their lives to gather. If Tan Ming wanted to stew it all and let everyone share equally, he wouldn't be pleased.
Tan Ming had already considered how to divide it on the way back.
