A total of twenty-eight people contributed, and the contents of the backpacks—corn, carrots, and potatoes—were assigned accordingly. There were eight chickens and six ducks; we only needed four chickens, and the rest were for you. How you distribute them is up to you, and we won’t interfere.
Li Jianping mentioned that they had brought dry firewood and grass, but they only needed four units of each; the rest was also for them, Tan Ming added.
"Do you have any objections?" Tan Ming asked Xu Le.
He indicated that they represented him, Yan Qing, Qi Qiuluo, Zhang Liu, Li Jianping, and others.
When it came to credit for their contributions, Tan Ming and Zhang Liu had the most significant roles, followed by Yan Qing and Xu Le. Yan Qing had saved three people entangled by plants, while Xu Le had pushed a large rock that crushed a Mutated Wild Jujube Tree. That tree's thorny branches were notorious for causing pain and numbness when they pricked someone.
Then there was Qi Qiuluo, who accidentally fell and made a noise. The nearby Variant Cang Er plants responded by launching their deadly seeds; if they had gotten any closer, they would have surely lost their lives.
With fewer people claiming credit for their efforts, Tan Ming decided to take four chickens. The remaining four chickens and six ducks would be divided among the other twenty-three individuals.
Xu Le glanced at everyone else; they all shook their heads in agreement, indicating they had no objections.
"Alright then, we want half of that gourd," he stated.
"No problem," came the reply.
Once everything was settled, Tan Ming finally allowed Li Jianping to take the chickens along with the carrots and potatoes to cook.
Many people volunteered to help with cooking but were chased away by Qi Qiuluo's loud reprimands.
"We have just enough people," Li Jianping said. "I’ll cook, Master Ban will assist me, and Ling Xing will tend the fire. No one else is needed!"
With over ten hours left, Tan Ming planned for them to have at least two meals from what they had. The chickens were manageable as long as they remained alive. However, the corn, potatoes, and carrots in their backpacks wouldn’t last; once exposed to air after opening the bags, they would wilt quickly. They could only stew everything at once.
Yan Qing brought over a massive gourd, which Tan Ming split in half. They kept one half as a pot and gave the other half to Xu Le, which also fell within their agreed share.
In the end, Yan Qing felt avenged as Tan Ming helped him get back at the gourd that had bullied him.
Watching them cheerfully prepare their meal, someone shouted out: "That's unfair!"
"Yeah! Why don’t we get any food?"
Previously in the restaurant, everyone ate together; why was it different now?
The person shouting seemed to forget that it was their fear of danger that kept them from participating. Xu Le felt speechless; veins bulged on his forehead as he retorted loudly: "Then why didn’t you go? Why should we risk our lives to bring back food only to share with you?"
His voice drowned out theirs completely.
"Did you ever say we couldn't eat when you left?" someone retorted.
Another person sobbed quietly.
Xu Le argued with them.
Li Jianping sighed.
Master Ban was speechless.
Zhang Liu frowned.
Qi Qiuluo was irritated.
Yan Qing felt helpless.
Ling Xing lowered his head to tend to the fire.
Tan Ming sat on the ground, doodling on a piece of paper.
Five minutes later, Tan Ming stood up and announced, "It's ready!"
Everyone fell silent, instinctively looking at him.
Yan Qing thought Tan Ming would explode in anger, but he didn’t. Instead, Tan Ming looked at them apologetically and said, "I'm sorry, my abilities are limited, and I can't help everyone. We couldn't find enough food for everyone to have a hearty meal. The Agricultural College has chickens, ducks, geese, pigs, sheep, and cows—things we can't bring here. The Peace Road has a row of Ginkgo Trees; any livestock passing through there will surely perish. So everyone, you can form groups and head to the Agricultural College. I've drawn a route map that details the risks we might encounter along the way and how to deal with them. It's a fight for survival; anyone who wants to go can come to me for a copy of the map."
