Tan Ming no longer appeared before Yan Qing, but he still heard from Xu Le that Yan Qing performed every week at the Old Alley Bar on Dong Street.
As the heavy rain turned to light snow, he remained punctual, even more so than Yan Qing during her work hours. He took pride in the fact that Yan Qing had never noticed him. Yet, he also felt a deep sense of loss.
Zhao Xiang was exhausted from work and busy with studies, and his life felt constrained. Yan Qing would take him for rides on her motorcycle to lift his spirits. Tan Ming sat in a corner of the bar, watching as Yan Qing led everyone in a lively celebration for Zhao Xiang's birthday.
For graduation, Yan Qing had prepared a grand birthday party for Zhao Xiang. With a beaming smile, Zhao Xiang pulled out a banner from the gift box that read: "In the wilderness of life, be unrestrained!" Unsurprisingly, Zhao Xiang was moved and embraced Yan Qing tightly.
Meanwhile, Tan Ming's presence in the corner grew increasingly silent. The tumultuous love he felt remained unspoken and unreciprocated.
At the library, Tan Ming knew that Yan Qing would be there that day. He had initially planned to leave, but Tan Gu insisted on playing and demanded his company. Still, having graduated, he wanted to see Yan Qing one last time.
He lacked the courage of youth now and hesitated when she asked where he would go after graduation. But he thought there could still be a final moment together.
He arrived early. The spot where Yan Qing usually sat was still empty. After waiting for half an hour, she finally came over with her backpack. Just as he was about to stand up, he noticed a book glowing on the shelf.
"Yan Qing!" Tan Ming called out, waking her from her thoughts. In that moment, his emotions surged within him like a burning plum blossom tree returning to its roots.
Yan Qing was shocked, surprised, and moved all at once. For a moment, words failed him as his heart raced with unexpressed feelings.
In the end, only four words remained.
He was completely unaware.
It all felt too much like Arabian Nights. Those four years, Tan Ming's happiness, joy, and melancholy were all tied to him. Yan Qing didn’t doubt it; he was just afraid to believe it was true.
He glanced at Tan Ming and pulled him into a tight embrace. "Tan Ming, you really are a terrible person!" Yan Qing cursed, frustration spilling out. How could he have hidden his love for so many years?
Tan Ming gently wiped away the tears from Yan Qing's face with his thumb. "Don't cry."
"I want to cry! Who told you to be such a jerk?" Yan Qing sobbed.
If it weren't for the Messenger Tool malfunctioning, causing him to take Tan Ming's place and coincidentally be affected by the Plum Blossom Tree and the Messenger Tool, leading to his memory confusion, Yan Qing would never have known about Tan Ming's feelings for him in this lifetime.
No one had ever liked him this much before, had they? Yan Qing pondered. Deep down, he didn't even realize he was so lovable.
"It’s me," Tan Ming said softly.
"No, it’s me," Yan Qing insisted, eager to take the blame.
The system's voice interrupted them. "Disciplinary Action concluded; the game continues!"
"How is it still not over?" Fan Xiaonan protested. "Wang Xiaoyan is completely dead; how can it not be finished?"
With this move still unresolved, they were on the brink of collapse!
"Hey, you two, let go! We’re going to die!" Qi Qiuluo exclaimed.
Yan Qing released Tan Ming and scolded him, "It's all your fault for not saying anything! Look at us now—there’s hardly any time left; our fate in this life ends here."
Qi Qiuluo rolled her eyes. "You two are destined to be a pair of star-crossed lovers!"
Master Ban sighed deeply.
Li Jianping hung his head in despair. Fan Xiaonan felt hopeless, while Zhang Liu was anxious.
"It's my fault," Tan Ming thought, lost in his romantic notions. Zhang Liu glanced at the time; there was less than an hour left. Tan Ming was unwilling to let Yan Qing suffer alongside him as a pair of star-crossed lovers.
He carefully considered every detail, thinking about the clues left by the system regarding the assassination of the little queen. An office, a woman.
He asked Yan Qing, "Where is Li Yan's office?"
Yan Qing provided the address. He took a look at Yan Qing and then headed towards the office. Yan Qing grabbed his hand and said, "I'll go with you."
