"Can I take a look at that Passat?"
"This..." Zhang Ming glanced awkwardly at Lawyer Liu, "The vehicle is currently in operation."
"That's fine, I can wait. I come around here often anyway," I said with a hint of implication.
"I've heard that several repair shops in this area do good work."
Lawyer Liu's expression changed noticeably. "What does Mr. Wei mean by that?"
"Literally," I replied, pulling out my phone. "I hope you don't mind if I take a few photos for keepsake."
"No need for that," Zhang Ming suddenly stood up.
"Since Mr. Wei wants to see the car, I'll arrange it right away. Xiao Zhou, take Mr. Wei to the parking lot."
A young man opened the door.
I followed him downstairs and heard Lawyer Liu's lowered voice behind me: "Old Zhang, this person is not simple..."
In the parking lot, the Passat was parked in the corner.
The car was a bit dirty but generally intact.
I walked around the car and squatted down to check the undercarriage.
"Mr. Wei, is there any problem with the car?" Xiao Zhou asked beside me.
"It's alright," I stood up and brushed off my pants. "It just seems like the exhaust pipe isn't quite standard."
"You might be mistaken," Xiao Zhou chuckled. "Aren't taxis like this? High mileage, it's normal for the exhaust pipe to be replaced a few times."
"Is that so?" I took out my phone and snapped a few pictures of the exhaust pipe. "What about the Intake Manifold and Throttle Body? Are they normal too?"
Xiao Zhou's smile froze. "You are...?"
"Oh, it's nothing, just a mechanic," I put my phone away. "By the way, does your company use an OBD system for tuning?"
Xiao Zhou's face turned pale in an instant.
Returning to the 4S shop, I sent the photos I took to Xiao Li.
Within ten minutes, he burst into my office.
"Master, this modification is definitely not something an ordinary repair shop can handle," Xiao Li said, enlarging the photo and pointing at the key parts.
"Look at this Throttle Body and this Intake Manifold; they are both custom-made."
"What do you mean?"
"It means this car has been modified for power," Xiao Li lowered his voice.
"Nowadays, taxis are speed-limited, but this car has clearly been tampered with. Not only the power but even the dashboard is specially made."
I pondered for a moment. "So that's why they didn't want me near this car."
"By the way, Master, I looked up this Jincheng Company," Xiao Li pulled out his phone.
"On the surface, it's under the municipal government, but the actual shareholder is someone named Ji Dongsheng. This person is quite famous in the automotive circle and has a particularly close relationship with the Vehicle Registration Office."
Just then, the receptionist knocked and entered. " brother Wei, there's someone outside claiming to be Lao Wang looking for you."
Xiao Li and I exchanged glances.
Lao Wang was an old acquaintance of mine from the Vehicle Registration Office; he rarely took the initiative to seek anyone out.
"Xiao Li, you go ahead and get back to work," I signaled to my apprentice. "Let's keep this under wraps for now."
Lao Wang looked just like always, wearing a linen shirt paired with trousers, appearing no different from an ordinary clerk.
But I knew he had deep connections within the Vehicle Registration Office.
"Lao Wei, I heard about yesterday's incident," Lao Wang said as he lit a cigarette. "Let me give you a piece of advice: don't dig too deep into this matter."
"Why?"
"Because it's not just about a car," Lao Wang took a deep drag from his cigarette.
"In the past two years, I know of at least a dozen indicators that have been manipulated like this. There are people backing them; otherwise, who would dare to do such a thing?"
I was taken aback. "Are you implying...?"
"I didn't say anything," Lao Wang stood up.
"By the way, the inspection station is going to crack down on operational vehicles. Tell your apprentice not to take those jobs for now, understood?"
Watching Lao Wang's retreating figure, I fell into deep thought.
I pulled out my phone and dialed my wife's number. "Honey, can you look up someone for me? Ji Dongsheng..."
"Ding," a message came in: "Mr. Wei, have you thought it over? We can raise the compensation to 500,000. Zhang Ming."
Just as I was about to reply, the office door was suddenly pushed open.
Xiao Li rushed in with a panicked expression. "Master, something's gone wrong!"
