In the following days, Mao Na took Hu Ruoyun to Ouyang Xiaxue's home. The children at Ouyang Xiaxue's house were almost walking. With someone holding onto his waist, he kept bouncing up and down, babbling indistinctly. Ouyang Xiaxue said he was saying "Daddy" and "Mommy," while her mother and Zhang Qiang's mother insisted that the child was calling them "Grandma" and "Nana."
Watching the two elderly women care for the little one, Ouyang Xiaxue's eyes were filled with affection and happiness. "Look how good it is! You both should be more attentive!"
Mao Na pinched her already plump face. "Sister, we are still students, okay? How can we be more attentive about this?"
Zhang Qiang was accompanying Hu Ruoyun for tea when Hu Ruoyun asked, "You've been transferred to the county government for almost two years now, right?"
Zhang Qiang replied, "Not quite; there are still a few months to go."
Hu Ruoyun continued, "If you leave the County Government, what do you want to do?"
Ouyang Xiaxue interjected, "Xiao Hu, did you hear something from your father-in-law? Our Zhang Qiang is doing just fine; he wouldn't just abandon us halfway through, right?"
Zhang Qiang waved his hand at her. "What are you talking about? Xiao Hu is just giving me a nudge." He then turned to Hu Ruoyun. "I haven't thought it through yet; there's no rush. I still have to stay in the office for at least three years, right?"
Hu Ruoyun took a sip of tea. "You should think about it; it's only a matter of time."
Zhang Qiang appeared contemplative. He then quietly said to Hu Ruoyun, "There's something going on with Yao Wei; I don't dare tell Xiaoxue..."
Seeing that Mao Na and Ouyang Xiaxue were chatting away, he said to them, "We're going to the kitchen for a smoke..."
Once in the kitchen with the door closed, Zhang Qiang cautiously said, "Since Yao Wei was transferred to the Organization Department, he seems a bit carried away. Plus, with Li Shengnan being pregnant... her emotions have been unstable lately...
Now he's been getting cozy with a woman in the office; it's been spreading around both courtyards... I bet only Li Shengnan and her family are unaware."
Hu Ruoyun had always thought of Zhang Qiang as a reliable person who wouldn't casually speak ill of his wife's friend’s husband. But given the situation and that it was Li Shengnan's time to give birth soon, what could anyone do?
The next day, they visited Li Shengnan's home again. Li Shengnan was now resting at home and not going to work. When she saw Mao Na arrive, she exclaimed happily, "Finally someone to talk to! Yao Wei works overtime every day; it's just me and my mom at home..."
Mao Na teased her, "Look at your face; it's as big as a basin! Look at your arms; they're almost as thick as my legs! And your legs are getting so big they’re nearly as wide as my waist!"
Li Shengnan shot back, "Don't just stand there talking without feeling any pain! Just wait until you're pregnant too; you'll see how it feels when you're in our shoes... No one can say anything about anyone!" She patted her prominent belly. "This thing keeps getting bigger; walking is becoming a chore... I'm just waiting for another month or two to deliver... I wonder if it's a boy or a girl. If it's a girl, I'll marry her off to that kid from Zhang Qiang's family just to annoy Ouyang Xiaxue's mother-in-law..."
After chatting for a while longer, when Hu Ruoyun and Mao Na were about to leave, Li Shengnan pulled Mao Na back. "If you have time tomorrow, come keep me company again..."
Remembering Zhang Qiang's words, Hu Ruoyun felt sympathy for Li Shengnan. However, he didn't dare mention it to Mao Na; if she told Li Shengnan about it again, it would surely cause an uproar.
