At midnight on the Mountain Road, heavy rain poured down, blurring visibility to a terrifying degree, like the gaping maw of a beast ready to swallow everything whole. Li Guofu's heart raced in sync with the dreadful weather, pounding harder with each beat, each one heavier than the last. He regretted it; he shouldn’t have risked his life just to meet a deadline. But it was too late for regrets now. The truck swayed like a solitary boat tossed about by the storm's fury. The wipers struggled to clear the windshield, but they could not wipe away the countless raindrops that mirrored his chaotic thoughts. 0

"This damn weather!" he cursed vehemently, his voice hoarse and trembling. 0

He took a deep drag from his cigarette, the brief jolt of nicotine helping him regain some composure. 0

"Fortune favors the bold; I’m all in!" He gritted his teeth and pressed down harder on the accelerator, the truck laboring up the muddy mountain road. 0

After navigating a sharp turn, the headlights suddenly illuminated a reflective road sign, its blinding light forcing him to squint instinctively. 0

Then came a dull thud as the truck jolted violently, as if it had run over something. 0

Li Guofu's heart sank; an ominous premonition washed over him. 0

"What did I hit?" he murmured to himself, his voice shaking uncontrollably. 0

With trembling hands, he slowly pushed open the door. 0

The icy rainwater drenched him instantly, sending a shiver down his spine. 0

He took a deep breath and stumbled toward the front of the truck. 0

In the dim light of the headlights, he saw a figure lying on the ground. 0

No, to be precise, it was a mass of indistinct flesh, trapped in the mud, its features obscured. 0

The rain mercilessly washed over it, mixing blood and mud together, spreading out like a horrific abstract painting. 0

Li Guofu felt a tumult in his stomach as he fought against the urge to vomit. He stepped closer, crouching down, trembling hands reaching out to check for any breath from the figure. 0

There was no breath. 0

The icy touch made him retract his hand sharply, as if shocked. 0

"Dead... dead..." he muttered incoherently to himself, fear gripping his throat like a cold hand. 0

His mind was blank, filled only with the buzzing sound in his ears. 0

What should he do? 0

Call the police? 0

Confess? 0

No, that wouldn't work! 0

If this shipment was delayed, he would lose everything! 0

He looked around in panic, hoping to find a way out of this situation. 0

At that moment, his gaze fell upon the chest of the deceased, where a golden toad pendant glimmered softly in the muddy water. 0

Compelled by an unseen force, he picked up the pendant and clutched it tightly in his hand. The cold touch brought him back to his senses, if only slightly. 0

Suddenly, a flash of lightning split the night sky, illuminating a cypress tree on the edge of the cliff. 0

Li Guofu abruptly looked up. In the rearview mirror, a pale, bluish face hung from the branches of the cypress, swaying with the fierce wind. 0

Those hollow eyes stared directly at him, as if they were a gaze from hell itself. 0

"Ah—" Li Guofu let out a terrified scream, scrambling back into the car. He started the engine and floored the accelerator, fleeing from this horrifying place. 0

He dared not look back; he feared seeing more terrifying sights. 0

The rain continued to pour, growing heavier as if it sought to wash away all the sins of the world. 0

Yet Li Guofu's heart felt as though it were gripped tightly by an invisible hand, making it hard for him to breathe. 0

Little did he know, this was just the beginning. 0

"What... what should I do..." he stammered into the car phone, dialing a number. "Hello... Old Wang... I... I think I... hit someone..." 0
