Before going to bed, I poured a glass of milk for Lu Siqing, and he threw a tantrum, smashing it.
As I was about to clean up, familiar comments filled my vision:
"Today is the anniversary of the white moonlight; the little one must be missing Mommy too much to accept Auntie's kindness."
"Seeing Daddy increasingly recognize the female lead must have made him furious."
"The male lead is eavesdropping outside; he must be feeling sad too. He doesn't want to betray his wife but can't help feeling attracted to his wife's sister, so he can only suppress his emotions. My heart aches for the CEO for a thousand years."
Since Lu Siqing was six months old, I took over my sister's role, taking care of him and Lu Yancheng with great care.
But no matter how hard I tried, I remained an outsider in this family.
It had been five years, and I felt utterly weary.
No matter how comforting the comments were, I no longer wanted this kind of distant and silent love.
Looking at the shattered glass scattered across the floor, I turned and left the children's room.
Lu Siqing was still shouting loudly:
"Go away! Grandma said you're a Cuckoo Occupying the Magpie's Nest. If it weren't for you, Mommy wouldn't have left me so early."
I chuckled softly:
"As you wish, I'll leave tonight."
The comments erupted in disbelief:
"The female lead is going to leave! The little one takes after his father; he's cold on the outside but warm on the inside. Don't argue with a child!"
"She's just putting on a tough front; she loves the male lead too much to actually leave. In the end, she'll still obediently stay and clean up the mess!"
The words on the screen made my heart ache.
Because of what they said, I couldn't argue back.
Five years ago, my Twin Sister fell seriously ill, reluctantly looking at her just half-year-old son, Lu Siqing.
She held my hand tightly, tears streaming down her face:
"Sister, you were almost violated; it was me who saved you."
"When you asked how you could repay me, I didn't speak up. Now, I'm asking you to help me take care of Lu Siqing, okay?"
I instinctively wanted to refuse.
At that moment, the comments appeared.
They said I was the heroine of this world, and my brother-in-law, Lu Yancheng, was my destined male lead. The male lead had a deceased first love, Jiang Qinghuan. After her death, Lu Yancheng and I grew closer, eventually becoming a pair of celestial lovers. I didn’t want to bear the stigma of coveting my brother-in-law.
I fled in a panic.
But then, Lu Yancheng's world collapsed. My parents' world collapsed too. One by one, they fell ill and handed me the baby swaddled in blankets.
Seeing the mess I left behind as I left, Lu Yancheng suddenly grabbed my wrist. His handsome face was framed by gold-rimmed glasses, and the sleeves of his white shirt were rolled up, revealing strong, muscular arms.
"Why aren't you cleaning up? What if Lu Siqing steps on the glass?"
His voice carried a tone of severity, mixed with dissatisfaction and anger. It was the tone I hated most.
Yet the comments all sided with Lu Yancheng:
[The male lead is right; no matter how angry the heroine is, she shouldn't leave the child with shards of glass. What if the baby gets hurt?]
[The male lead's feelings are conflicted; on one hand, he promised to take care of his original partner's son, while on the other hand, he feels sorry for the heroine who has endured so much for years. I'm torn apart.]
...
Watching the comments continuously defending the father and son duo, my initial softness turned into a calm indifference.
Even disgust.
I pushed Lu Yancheng away forcefully:
"Please hire a nanny; I won't do anything for you two anymore."
He frowned at me, displeasure evident in his gaze. "What are you making a fuss about? Did my mother-in-law say something unpleasant again?"
"Yes! She always thinks that my sister's death was my fault and even told your son that I am the Cuckoo Occupying the Magpie's Nest."
"Is that all?"
Of course, it wasn't just that. But I didn't want to explain too much. "My sister saved me; I've spent five years repaying that debt."
"Lu Siqing is about to start elementary school; he doesn't need someone hovering over him all the time."
In the past, I made breakfast for both of them, took Lu Siqing to early education classes, squeezed in time to buy groceries and cook, and managed the household chores. On weekends, I had to take Lu Siqing to swimming lessons, piano lessons, and badminton classes multiple times a day. I never missed a single one.
I also had to endure phone calls from my mother interrogating me about whether I was "abusing" her precious grandson. It was exhausting.
Seeing the weariness and frustration etched on my face, Lu Yancheng's expression softened slightly. "I'll hire an hourly worker."
The comments exploded instantly:
"Oh my! The male lead is a neat freak who absolutely hates contact with strangers; this is a huge sacrifice for the female lead."
"Exactly! Although he finds his mother-in-law quite annoying, there's nothing he can do! She lost her most beloved daughter and now has to watch her less favored younger daughter be healthy while getting a wealthy and handsome son-in-law; it's only natural she's feeling off balance."
"Just hang in there, female lead; dawn is just ahead. Once you get through this hardship, there will be sweetness waiting for you."
Reading these comments filled me with confusion. Can a wounded heart truly heal? Even if it does, can one simply ignore the ugly scars left behind?
