"Let her go!"
My mother couldn't accept my rebellious attitude.
Shoving her plump body, she tried to push me away.
I didn't care to stay, grabbing Little Apple and turning to leave.
But Lu Siqing, for some reason, shouted angrily, "Why are you wearing the scarf Auntie knitted? She didn't even make one for me this year!"
In past winters, I would personally knit fluffy sweaters and scarves for the two of them, adorned with cute little bunny patterns.
Lu Siqing had inherited Jiang Qinghuan's constitution; he caught colds easily when the wind blew.
In previous years, I bundled him up tightly, but he complained that I was being old-fashioned.
I was tired.
I didn't want to make things difficult for myself.
Yet he questioned why I gave things to others instead of him.
Seeing Lu Siqing reach out to snatch it away like a complete little tyrant, I quickly protected Little Apple:
"The stuff is mine; I can give it to whoever I want!"
"But I'm your son!"
Lu Siqing's face was full of grievance.
Hearing this, my mother couldn't take it anymore and rushed out, grabbing my collar:
"Are you the one encouraging this? Jiang Qinghuan is Lu Siqing's mother, you shameless wretch!"
She was surprisingly strong.
Seeing that I was about to be at a disadvantage, Little Apple quickly intervened:
"Stop! Don't bully my godmother!"
Lu Siqing stubbornly held onto her scarf without letting go.
The four of us were tangled together.
Right next to us was the staircase.
My mother's balance faltered, and her hefty body looked like it was about to fall.
I quickly pulled open the door and carried Little Apple over. Lu Siqing wasn't so lucky. Following Grandma, they tumbled down the stairs like two little meatballs, landing with a loud thud. My mother fell, her bones shattering, her expression twisted in pain as she cried out. Lu Siqing was pinned beneath, blood streaming from the back of his head.
When Lu Yancheng picked him up, Lu Siqing looked at me in shock and grievance, saying, "You could have caught me. Why did you choose to save someone else?" In the past, I would have rather been hurt myself than let Lu Siqing suffer even a scratch. I pressed my lips together and avoided his gaze while comforting the frightened Little Apple.
Lu Siqing was in excruciating pain, and his fragile heart could no longer bear it; he burst into tears.
I went to the hospital to visit Zhou Baya, who was resting during her pregnancy. Little Apple was excited, telling me that she would soon have a brother and a sister. "How's that boy who tried to steal my scarf?" she asked.
"I don't know," I replied. Zhou Bailin, rarely sharp-tongued, chimed in, "Just ignore him. Little White Eyed Wolf doesn’t know gratitude and almost pushed Little Apple down the stairs!"
After the incident, Little Apple informed us that Lu Siqing had deliberately pushed her toward the stairs while trying to grab her scarf. If it weren't for his antics, he might not have gotten caught up with Grandma's wrath. He was reaping what he sowed.
As I was leaving, I ran into Lu Yancheng. He looked much more haggard than before, lacking his usual spirited demeanor. It made sense; with two injured family members at home, each more troublesome than the last, life was bound to be challenging.
"Mai Ye, why didn't you protect Lu Siqing that day?"
"I had to protect Little Apple."
"But Lu Siqing is Jiang Qinghuan's son. You've raised him like your own for five years!"
"So what?"
Lu Yancheng looked at me in shock.
"In the past, if he got even a little hurt, you would panic and rummage through the medicine cabinet, unable to sleep all night from worry."
"People change! I divorced you and severed ties with my family; he has nothing to do with me anymore."
Lu Yancheng didn't believe me. My heart had turned as hard as stone as he pulled me into the hospital room.
Lu Siqing lay on the hospital bed, his arm in a sling, the injury on his forehead still unhealed.
He looked at me with red-rimmed eyes, biting his lip and turning his head away, as if waiting for me to comfort him like before.
Seeing that I remained unmoved, Lu Yancheng pinned me against the wall.
"Mai Ye, don't be so cold. How can you remain indifferent when you see Lu Siqing hurt like this?"
"What do you want me to do?"
"Can you take care of him like you used to?"
"No!"
I refused decisively, without a hint of hesitation.
The expressions on their faces changed instantly.
"You took care of Lu Siqing for five years; he calls out your name at night. Can't you be a little kinder?"
"I'm cruel?"
"In our five years of marriage, you let your parents tell him that I was Cuckoo Occupying the Magpie's Nest, taking the place of his birth mother, making him see me as an enemy."
"When we divorced, you wouldn't give me a single penny of our assets, waiting for the day I end up on the streets begging."
"Lu Siqing has said more than once that I don't deserve to be his mother; his mother will always be Jiang Qinghuan."
"As you wished, I left. Why are you still entangled with me?"
