During the college entrance examination, my sister scored 680, while her delinquent boyfriend only managed 340.
I advised her to break up with him, but she insisted that if I pressured her further, she would drop out of school and work in a factory.
Having fallen for his manipulative tactics, she gave up a luxurious first-class family trip to Sanya and insisted on spending the New Year with him in his village.
Our parents were furious and searched the house for a rolling pin, but I confidently stopped them.
"Let me go with my sister. I promise she'll come back and kick Chen Qi to the curb."
Before we left, our parents took us to the train station, grumbling the whole way.
"Instead of taking a first-class vacation, you come here to squeeze onto a train. I really don't understand what you young people are thinking."
My sister looked a bit embarrassed, so I patted her shoulder.
"Oh come on, Chen Qi lives far away. Mom and Dad, just stop nagging. After we take the train, we’ll have to switch to a bus, and then maybe even a car. Who knows, we might even have to ride a bullock cart to get to the village."
My sister was surprised; she only knew roughly where Chen Qi lived but had no idea how to get there specifically.
"Yuan Yuan, how do you know all this?"
Before coming here, I asked a friend who is from Chen Qi's hometown. He not only told me about local customs but also shared many stories about Chen Qi before he transferred schools.
I pulled out my phone and zoomed in on the map five times right in front of her.
"Look, this is Chen Qi's house. You’ll have to travel this long mountain road every year to visit him."
My sister seemed a bit dazed. Her relationship with Chen Qi was mostly a result of teenage rebellion, and she had never really thought about the future.
A boy in a cotton jacket with a cigarette dangling from his lips knocked on the car window. When he saw my parents, he immediately tossed the cigarette and extinguished it under his foot.
"Hey, Uncle and Auntie, sorry! I didn’t know you were the ones sending Manman to catch the train."
"Chen Qi!"
The moment she saw him, the clouds on my sister's face disappeared. Ignoring the snow still falling, she threw open the car door and rushed to hug him.
Through the fogged-up glass, I could vaguely make out Chen Qi's features.
His facial contours were sharp, with messy bangs hiding his thick eyebrows. He had large double eyelids and a high nose bridge, but his lips appeared somewhat thin.
He was not bad-looking, but despite being the same age as us, he already bore the marks of society on his face.
"This is my sister; you can just call her Yuan Yuan."
Chen Qi helped us with our luggage and insisted on carrying all the heavy items himself.
My parents' expressions softened for a moment, but then his careless words brought them back to reality.
"Oh, Yuan Yuan, your face looks quite round. Girls should be slimmer to look better, like Manman."
With that, my parents hit the gas and zoomed away from us. It was clear they were desperately holding back their urge to slap Chen Qi across the face.
Chen Qi had just stepped on a landmine with that comment.
My sister and I are twins. My mother had a smooth delivery when I was born, but there were complications when it came to my sister.
The doctor informed us that my mother's condition was critical, and she might have to give up on my sister.
Our family was in a frenzy, and my grandparents nearly bowed their heads in the delivery room out of desperation.
Fortunately, both mother and child came through safely in the end. After much deliberation, my parents decided to name us "Su Yuan" and "Su Man."
My father often says that our family can only be considered complete when we are all safe and sound.
My sister's expression darkened as well, but she still took Chen Qi's hand and cautiously tried to persuade him.
"Chen Qi, don’t say that. Yuan Yuan looks just fine right now."
I immediately frowned.
Manman and I were almost like two peas in a pod; the only difference was that I loved snacks and excelled in sports, which made me more muscular.
She had always been frail and avoided meat for a long time, so she appeared a bit slimmer, but we both maintained a normal weight.
"You call yourself Chen Qi, but I haven't seen you accomplish much," I remarked.
Chen Qi frowned slightly, and Manman quickly stepped in to smooth things over.
"Oh come on, don’t take it seriously. I was just joking. Let’s hurry to the platform; the train is about to leave."
Just as I turned my back to Manman, I heard Chen Qi quietly complaining to her.
"Your sister is so rude; if she comes to our house, the elders will definitely say something about it. It will affect their impression of you, so it’s better to send her back."
I threw a pack of leftover instant noodles at Chen Qi, splattering him all over his face.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, it slipped out of my hand."
I pulled Manman from his arms, wrapping my waist around her and giving him a provocative glance.
"Come on, take me with you! I've never celebrated the New Year in the village. I heard they even slaughter pigs for the festival; I want to see what their pigs look like. I promise I'll be good."
Manman looked at Chen Qi helplessly, seemingly unaware that I was calling him a pig.
"Chen Qi, just take Yuan Yuan with you. We agreed on this before, and besides, look how hard it was for you to get tickets during the Spring Festival Travel Rush."
"…Fine, if Yuan Yuan is as obedient as you, it will save us a lot of trouble."
Reluctantly, Chen Qi took out the tickets and handed them to us so we could pass through security.
I took a look at them and exclaimed, "Wow, hard seats!"
