My Mom waved her hand, urging the waiter to hurry up with the dishes, and called over the Dining Manager. "All the dishes we ordered should be served in the small room. If any dish dares to be brought to the big table, you can expect to lose your job."
The manager nodded repeatedly and left the private room with the menu in hand.
My dad was managing things in the room while my sister and I were indulging ourselves in the small room.
An hour later, both my sister and I were full.
However, My Mom didn’t let us leave and insisted we stay in the small room.
Aunt, starving and feeling like her stomach was touching her back, couldn’t help but step out to see why the food was taking so long.
As soon as she walked out, she saw my sister and me leaning back in our chairs, rubbing our round bellies and burping.
She instantly perked up. "Wang Shuqin! How could you let these two little girls eat first? Don’t you think that’s disrespectful to us old folks?"
My Mom leisurely took a sip of tea, smiling as she stood up to support Aunt. "Sister-in-law, look how long the cold dishes have been sitting on this table. If we don’t eat soon, they’ll go bad."
"I’m just concerned about the kids. Letting them taste it first is better so we can replace anything that isn’t good."
"Don’t worry, all the dishes will be out soon."
Aunt was so exasperated that she leaned back dramatically. "Wang Shuqin! At my age, I’ve never seen a younger generation daring enough to taste food for their elders!"
My Mom continued to smile sweetly. "Sister-in-law, please don’t be angry. You wouldn’t believe how precious the dishes are at this hotel."
"This table of food costs quite a bit!"
Aunt slammed the door shut in anger and returned to the private room.
Chen Zhiwen, his face flushed from drinking, leaned back in his chair and looked at Aunt.
"Why are you back, Sister-in-law? Was the food not to your liking?"
Aunt threw her chopsticks onto the table. "Zhiwen, it's not that I'm criticizing you. You said it was a rare occasion for you to come back, and we should have a Reunion Dinner."
"Look at your wife bringing along two little girls, eating and drinking, as if they were putting on a show for someone."
Chen Zhiwen chuckled innocently. "Sister-in-law, do you want to eat more?"
Aunt was taken aback and instinctively shook her head.
Chen Zhiwen continued, "Then how about we call it a day? Shu Qin and the others don't know any better; we shouldn't let them ruin everyone's appetite."
Cousin chimed in, "Uncle is right; my mom is just being petty. It's not often we get to reunite, so we should still enjoy the Reunion Dinner."
"Besides, the food here isn't cheap."
Chen Zhiwen waved his hand decisively. "Alright then, let's go with Da Zhuang's suggestion. I'll have Shu Qin take the two girls outside so they don't dampen everyone's spirits."
"Let's have a good time drinking among us men!"
"Waiter! Bring two more hearty dishes to this table!"
Aunt's expression changed as she instinctively glanced at Uncle.
Uncle's face darkened as he slammed his hand on the table. "Zhiwen! What do you mean by this?"
Chen Zhiwen's eyes were red, and he stood up abruptly. "Brother! I’ve already said it! Reunion Dinner! Togetherness!"
"Why do you have to make me uncomfortable!"
He suddenly grabbed a bottle of wine, raising it as if to smash it.
My Mom screamed and rushed over to hug him. "Zhiwen! Don't be impulsive!"
Uncle shrank back in his chair, frightened.
Cousin quickly grabbed Chen Zhiwen's hand. "Uncle, please don’t be angry."
Chen Zhiwen shook him off forcefully and pulled My Mom towards the exit. "Let’s go!"
My sister and I hurried to follow.
Once outside, his drunkenness vanished in an instant.
My Mom opened the car door and frowned. "Did you settle the bill?"
Chen Zhiwen nodded. "Yes, but only for our table."
