On January 7th and 8th, 1995, the Annan County New South Demonstration High School (Group) will conduct a two-day personnel screening for over three hundred teachers and management staff (including logistics and finance) from the original four schools at the Annan County Education Committee. Frontline teachers will undergo a one-on-one preliminary selection, and those selected will enter the second round of teaching evaluations. Logistics and finance management will be assessed by professionals brought in by the evaluation team, who will verify the financial records of the relevant schools over a period of time. The educational foundation will be evaluated by a panel of experts. The Annan County side will primarily cooperate, at most having advisory rights.
With a glimmer of hope, Teacher Wang also made preparations for the assessment.
On January 7th, in the multimedia classroom of the Annan County Education Committee, staff from the original Annan County Eight Middle School and three other schools gathered. Li Gewei even dressed sharply in a suit and took a seat in the front row.
At 8:30 AM, Secretary Li Gaoqiang of Annan County and County Mayor Mao Weiguo led a group into the room. Huang Zonghua, director of the Annan County Office, served as the host and introduced the leaders and representatives from partner organizations seated at the podium: Secretary Li Gaoqiang of Annan County, Comrade Mao Weiguo, director of the Annan County Education Committee Zhi Wei, Ms. Liu Ru Yan, chairwoman of the Annan County New South Demonstration High School (Group), former principal of Jiangcheng First High School Comrade Deng Chaoming, former academic director of Jiangcheng Experimental High School Comrade Jia Mingliang, and Comrade Zeng Peiyan, former head of the Basic Education Department of the Jiangbei Province Education Committee.
Following this was Secretary Li Gaoqiang's speech congratulating the establishment of the Annan County New South Demonstration High School (Group) and welcoming Ms. Liu Ru Yan and her team.
County Mayor Mao Weiguo then spoke: "We must ensure that the Annan County New South Demonstration High School (Group) operates independently and transparently in its hiring practices. Anyone who dares to sabotage or engage in petty actions during this process will be dealt with severely!"
After his speech, both Secretary Li and Mayor Mao stood up to invite Ms. Liu Ru Yan to speak on behalf of the Annan County New South Demonstration High School (Group), leading applause in welcome.
Teacher Wang, who wore glasses and sat in the last row, felt that the voice and name of the woman speaking on stage sounded somewhat familiar but did not connect it with Ms. Liu whom Hu Ruoyun had taken him to meet.
Liu Ru Yan's speech was brief: "The Annan County New South Demonstration High School (Group) will make great efforts to transform educational concepts, changing education and teaching methods with new ideas so that methods determine results! We will alleviate all concerns for our teaching staff! Let us work together to transform our image within three years and establish a high school education brand rooted in Annan South that radiates to eastern Annan County and surrounding counties such as Anqiu, Xin Yuan, and Kai City within five to eight years!"
After this brief meeting and briefing session concluded, they moved into the personnel screening phase for various positions.
Except for finance and logistics management positions being assessed separately, candidates for academic management, teaching management, student life management, and faculty roles were unified in taking numbers to different offices for one-on-one discussions.
Li Gewei was confident but found himself with a later number. Principal Wu Jingzhong from Annan County First Vocational High School also participated in the preliminary screening for academic management. Half an hour later, Principal Wu came out while Principal Liu Quanyou from Qizhong entered. Li Gewei stopped Wu Jingzhong: "Old Wu, what did they ask?"
Wu Jingzhong replied: "Not much; they just asked me two questions and listened to some of my views..."
Li Gewei eagerly pressed on: "What questions did they ask?"
Wu Jingzhong looked around to ensure no one was listening before whispering: "One question was 'The consensus among principals is that relying on teachers is fundamental; how do you understand this?' The other was 'Teaching management is a principal's primary task; how do you think we should effectively manage teaching?'"
Li Gewei felt as if he had struck gold; there were advantages to being behind in line!
He then asked Wu Jingzhong: "What was their evaluation of you?"
Wu Jingzhong shook his head: "They didn’t say anything specific; they only mentioned that preliminary screening results would be announced collectively after a week."
Finally, it was Li Gewei's turn to enter. The discussion was led by two elderly men whom he recognized as former principal Deng Chaoming from Jiang City No. 1 Middle School and former head Zeng Peiyan from the Basic Education Department of Jiangbei Province Education Committee.
Zeng Peiyan looked at his materials and asked Li Gewei: "Comrade Li Gewei, it seems you have been working at Annan Eight Middle School for quite some time?"
Li Gewei respectfully replied: "Yes, I have been there for over five years. I started managing general affairs and later oversaw all logistics work; last year I took charge of overall operations..."
After listening to Li Gewei's response, Deng Chaoming wrote something on the form in his hand and then asked, “Previously, the overall situation at Annan Eight Middle School was not very good. Can you discuss what factors led to this?”
Li Gewei felt a surge of excitement, thinking to himself: Here’s my chance.
He straightened up and replied earnestly, “This is largely related to the management level and personal abilities of the previous school leadership! The former leaders had outdated ideas, extremely backward educational philosophies, and there were many issues in personnel management. For instance, they allowed some hired staff to serve as homeroom teachers and shielded individuals who maliciously slandered the county's educational work… There were significant problems with political positioning and ideological awareness…”
Once he finished speaking, Zeng Peiyan posed another question: “If you were appointed as the principal of Annan County New South Demonstration High School and given authority, how would you reasonably exercise that power?”
Li Gewei was so excited that he felt like his heart might leap out of his chest. Initially, he had only thought about becoming a Vice Principal; this question seemed to indicate that his aspirations were not too conservative!
He forced himself to suppress his inner joy and spoke confidently: “If I were made principal, I would strengthen the management of the teaching staff under the leadership of the Annan County Committee and government, with guidance and support from the Annan County Education Committee. I would resolutely dismiss those who do not meet personnel requirements to ensure the integrity of our teaching staff…”
After Li Gewei finished speaking, Deng Chaoming and Zeng Peiyan exchanged glances. The composed Deng Chaoming said, “Alright, Comrade Li Gewei, our conversation today will end here. The final results will be announced in a week.”
The two stood up and shook hands with Li Gewei.
Wang Hongjian was applying for the positions of Language Teacher and homeroom teacher. There were many teachers waiting ahead of him, and by the time it was his turn, it was almost noon.
Finally, his name was called according to the order. Our Teacher Wang suppressed his racing heart as he followed a young woman from the Education Committee to the designated room.
Sitting behind the desk were Jia Mingliang, the former Academic Director of Jiangcheng Experimental High School, and another young and capable woman. He kindly invited Teacher Wang to take a seat and picked up the form in front of him. “You are Teacher Wang Hongjian, right…”
Before he could finish speaking, the young woman beside him suddenly seemed to remember something: “Director Jia, the chairman has instructed that this doesn’t need to be done… I got so busy that I forgot about this!”
She stood up and addressed the girl who had called out names: “Please call the next person.”
Then she turned to Wang Hongjian and said, “Teacher Wang, please come with me!”
—Could it be that he wouldn’t even have a chance to participate in the selection? Teacher Wang felt despair wash over him: Surely it can’t be this unfair!
