Ma Yuan sighed, "Jingjing, you and your family are really foolish!"
"Do you know what I saw that day?"
"I saw your parents welcoming guests with smiles on their faces, but secretly wiping away their tears."
"You say your uncle and aunt are well-experienced people; if they could cry like that, it shows how much they don't want to see you get married."
"But your family comes from a scholarly background, so your uncle and aunt can only swallow their grievances. No matter how heartbroken they feel, they have to face everyone with a smile."
Ma Yuan said with red-rimmed eyes, "Jingjing, I really couldn't hold back that day. I thought such a wonderful girl shouldn't be wasted on Zhang Heng!"
"So I told myself that as long as you know how to protect yourself, I will do everything I can to help you."
I was moved and hugged Ma Yuan tightly. "Ma Yuan!"
Ma Yuan patted my back like comforting a child. "Jingjing, don't cry. You still have me in the future."
The car stopped after driving into the community.
Ma Yuan and my brother-in-law helped me out of the car, reminding me to get a good night's sleep and not to overthink things.
They watched me walk into the building before driving away.
I leaned against the elevator wall, tears streaming down my face.
Without Ma Yuan, my life might have been ruined by Zhang Heng's deceit.
I would have spent my life being ground down by my family.
But now, things were different.
Since Zhang Heng doesn't love me, I have decided to get a divorce.
I want to leave this family filled with selfishness and a preference for sons!
Since they all think I'm an easy target, let them see whether I truly am one!
Early the next morning, Ma Yuan called me and invited me to celebrate the New Year at her home.
I gladly accepted.
This year’s New Year’s Eve was spent at Ma Yuan and her husband’s place.
We enjoyed hot pot, opened champagne, and counted down together.
Ma Yuan even wished me health and happiness in the coming year.
I felt as if I had been reborn.
I am grateful to the heavens for bringing Ma Yuan into my life.
My divorce from Zhang Heng was delayed until the first day back at work after the holiday.
During this time, Zhang Heng repeatedly begged for my forgiveness and even suggested we hold a wedding again.
But I completely ignored him.
Before the divorce, Zhang Heng wanted me to return the betrothal gifts and dowry.
However, my parents had already sent those items back to him long ago.
After the divorce, Zhang Heng's mother complained every day about not having a well-behaved daughter-in-law in the house.
But all of this was their own doing.
Because Zhang Heng had already lost me, his good wife.
Ma Yuan told me that they had had enough of the Zhang family's eccentricities and were going on vacation to clear their minds.
I felt fortunate to have a good sister.
As I walked out of the Zhang family's front door, the cold wind howled past me, yet it could not disperse the anger and sense of relief within my heart.
Zhang Heng was still calling my name from behind, trying to hold me back, but his voice sounded so pale and powerless at that moment.
The next morning, sunlight flooded the windowsill as I sat at Ma Yuan's dining table, feeling a long-lost sense of ease for the first time.
Just then, the phone rang; it was a colleague from work, informing me that an important project was looking for a leader.
After hanging up, I looked up at Ma Yuan and my brother-in-law, a smile spreading across my face. "Thank you for helping me realize that a woman can live well without relying on anyone."
A few days later, when Zhang Heng came knocking again, seeking reconciliation, I looked at him coldly. "Zhang Heng, you can't even offer me the most basic respect; how can you expect my forgiveness?" His face flushed red, but he was at a loss for words.
As I turned to leave, I heard him mumbling behind me, but I no longer cared.
