"You dare to hit me?" Zhao Xinrong covered her burning cheek, seething with anger. She certainly did not think that Lin Rumei was saving her.
With so many socialites from Hong Kong Island present tonight, being slapped in public by Lin Rumei only fueled her rage. The commotion drew the attention of those around them, and most people began to criticize Lin Rumei, as it was inappropriate to resort to violence in such a setting.
Zhao Xinrong's parents, alarmed by their daughter's distress, hurried over and attempted to exert pressure using the Zhao family's influence. However, Lin Rumei and her father, Lin Shuang, remained unfazed. "I was saving her!" Lin Rumei said coldly to Zhao Xinrong's parents.
"You hit my daughter and still dare to claim you were saving her? Pah! Who do you think you are? Even if you're the son of Hua Xia's Richest, you shouldn't be so arrogant," Zhao Xinrong's father shouted angrily.
If Lin Shuang and Lin Rumei had offered a polite apology, the Zhao family might have chosen to downplay the incident. However, the Lin family not only struck someone but also presented a grandiose excuse, which was infuriating.
"President Zhao, please don't be angry. We truly meant well for your daughter. You can offend anyone, but it's best not to offend Mr. Jiang," Lin Shuang advised earnestly.
"Lin Shuang, you are considered a prominent figure on Hong Kong Island. Why have you become so timid? To show such respect to a young man from the mainland is truly laughable," Zhao Xinrong's father scoffed.
"President Zhao, I am only advising you out of respect for our acquaintance. Before Mr. Jiang gets angry, it would be wise to step back," Lin Shuang said as he took a step forward, his gaze intense.
The Zhao family members felt a twinge of fear towards Lin Shuang; after all, he was a powerful underground figure known for his ruthless dealings. Although the Zhao family was well-established on Hong Kong Island, they still kept their distance from such underground forces.
"Lin Shuang, don’t go too far! Do you really think the Zhao family is afraid of you? You underground figures are nothing but lowlifes; it would be better for you to tone it down," Zhao Xinrong's father retorted darkly.
"I've already been quite restrained; otherwise, I would have let my fists do the talking," Lin Shuang raised his fist, revealing a fierce glare. As an underground boss, his imposing presence was undeniable; the Zhao family members were merely businesspeople and could not compare to him in intimidation.
However, being scared off by Lin Shuang felt somewhat humiliating. Just as they were caught in this dilemma, a voice rang out from afar.
"Who dares to cause trouble in my Liu family?" The crowd parted as several members of the Liu family descended the stairs.
The speaker was Han Baiying, the matriarch of the third branch of the Liu family and mother of Liu Toukang and Liu Jiyue. Since Liu Toukang returned from the Golden Triangle last year, the Liu family's pharmaceutical company developed a miraculous medicine that brought fame to both brothers. Now, the third branch held the highest status within the Liu family.
With her husband bedridden and her sons thriving in reputation, Han Baiying had become the de facto leader of the Liu family; both the first and second branches had to bow to her authority.
Today marked her son's engagement banquet, and someone causing a ruckus here greatly displeased her.
"Lin Shuang, the Liu family is here. I want to see whether they will help you or me," Zhao Xinrong's father sneered before quickly walking up to Han Baiying to accuse Lin Shuang.
