Less than half an hour after he left, Xiao Mu sent me a screenshot.
It was from Huang Dandan's Moments:
"Another energetic day: just a simple 'I’m hungry,' and a warm breakfast appears! Looking forward to collaborating on a new project with someone~"
The accompanying image was of the buns from the breakfast shop that Chen Ruzhou had his assistant buy.
I didn’t reply.
I silently wiped away my tears and crouched down to carefully clean up the soy milk that Chen Ruzhou had spilled. After struggling for a long time, I sadly realized that the stains on the office carpet had already seeped in and wouldn’t come out.
In a fit of anger, I called the administrative department to request a carpet replacement.
After all, this was one of the ergonomic office supplies that Chen Ruzhou had specially ordered from abroad to persuade me to join his team.
While I was at it, I sorted out all the office supplies Chen Ruzhou had given me, including those project trophies with sentimental value, and even all our photos together, one by one.
I spent the entire day packing everything into boxes.
He probably wouldn’t want this "junk" anymore.
After Chen Ruzhou left that day, he didn’t show up in the tech department for several days.
I heard he was busy having meetings with Huang Dandan’s Product Department.
It seemed like the new project was progressing smoothly.
Or perhaps he was waiting for me to admit my mistake.
In the past, whenever there were disagreements at work, I would always be the first to back down—without exception.
But this time, I didn’t seek him out. There was no need to anymore.
I blocked him on WeChat and his phone number, canceled all my Work Group accounts, and even returned my company access card.
After finishing everything, I called my parents, who were often on business trips abroad, to discuss my plans.
I told them I wanted to go to the United States branch to help my aunt with an urgent project.
My plan was to report directly to the Guangzhou Branch with Xiao Mu once the project was over.
Aside from Xiao Mu, no one else knew that I had accepted the offer from Guangzhou.
This plan should perfectly avoid any chance of running into Chen Ruzhou.
My mother joked over the phone, "Oh, are you going on a business trip to the United States with A Zhou?"
I made an excuse to deny it, not wanting to explain too much.
I simply said I wanted to help my aunt.
I pleaded with my father to book me the earliest flight, preparing to fly out that night.
As I was leaving, I unexpectedly ran into Chen Ruzhou's mother in the company lobby.
She warmly pulled me aside for a chat, "Wan Wan, why are you here alone? Isn’t A Zhou supposed to pick you up? Didn’t he say he would take you to Silicon Valley to explore new projects? Make sure to perform well; Auntie supports you both."
I found it a bit strange.
When I joined the company, I had indeed mentioned to Chen Ruzhou that I wanted to go to Silicon Valley to learn new technologies and experience a different entrepreneurial atmosphere.
But given our current situation, it didn’t seem appropriate for us to go on a business trip together.
However, time was running short, so I just gave her a few vague responses and left.
What I didn’t expect was that at the airport, I actually ran into Chen Ruzhou.
He was with colleagues from the Product Department.
Huang Dandan was also there.
Chen Ruzhou held Huang Dandan's notebook bag in one hand and supported her suitcase with the other.
They walked at the end of the group.
From time to time, Huang Dandan would turn her head to say something to him, and Chen Ruzhou would always lean down to listen, his expression focused.
Not like with me.
Chen Ruzhou had always been taller than me since we were kids, and he only grew more outstanding as time went on.
When I spoke to him, I always had to look up, while he forever maintained a condescending demeanor.
It turned out that he would lower his head for someone he truly cared about.
I took a deep breath and reminded myself to maintain some professionalism.
What they did had nothing to do with me; if I kept overthinking, I would just slap myself back to reality.
But it seemed there was only one path leading to the boarding gate.
I could only follow them from a distance.
Finally, we reached a fork in the road.
Chen Ruzhou appeared to be somewhat distracted.
He made several phone calls, but none went through, and he fiddled with his phone for a long time.
In the end, he borrowed a colleague's phone, his face darkening as he walked over to a nearby resting area.
Before long, my phone suddenly rang; it was an unfamiliar number.
"Su Wan, you're quite temperamental this time. If I don't come looking for you, you won't report your work proactively, will you?"
"How dare you block me?"
"If you have the guts, just ignore me. Once you get to Silicon Valley, in a place where you're unfamiliar, let's see who will help you with the project."
Chen Ruzhou's tone was harsh as he vented his frustrations at me for a long while.
I remained silent; there was really no way to respond to that.
But it seemed to only make Chen Ruzhou angrier.
"I'm not going to say much more. Just add the Work Group back."
"I'm about to head to the United States with the Product Department for the Project Kickoff Meeting. You might not be able to reach me by phone, so don't come crying to me later if you run into problems at work."
I couldn't be bothered to reply even a single word.
I hung up the phone and turned it off.
From a distance, I watched as Chen Ruzhou, with a scowl on his face, returned to his spot.
He angrily grabbed Huang Dandan's suitcase and, without hesitation, headed straight for the boarding gate on the left.
With a sigh, I turned and walked to the right.
