Chapter Four: The Beginning of Revenge
Li Fugen carefully examined the woman in the photograph. Her features bore a resemblance to Lin Wan'er, but there was an added air of coldness and determination. A bold guess surged in his mind: could this woman be connected to Lin Wan'er's death?
He decided to start with the photograph, seeking to uncover the woman's identity. He showed the picture around the village, but the villagers all shook their heads, indicating they did not recognize her. Just as he was at a loss, he thought of someone—the village's Old Tailor.
The Old Tailor had traveled extensively in his youth and was well-informed; perhaps he could identify the woman in the photograph. Li Fugen made his way to the Old Tailor's home and handed him the picture. The Old Tailor took a moment to scrutinize it before suddenly exclaiming, "Isn't this Old Liu's daughter?"
"Old Liu's daughter?" Li Fugen's heart skipped a beat. "What is her name?"
"Her name is Liu Fang, a child of misfortune," the Old Tailor sighed and began to recount Liu Fang's story.
It turned out that Liu Fang's father, Old Liu, was a well-known blacksmith in the village, known for his integrity and hatred of evil. Liu Fang had trained in martial arts under her father's guidance from a young age and was quite skilled. A few years ago, Li Dazhuang had taken a liking to Liu Fang's beauty and had persistently harassed her. When Old Liu learned of this, he was furious and confronted Li Dazhuang, only to be injured by him and his gang.
Upon hearing that her father had been hurt, Liu Fang was consumed with rage and sought out Li Dazhuang for retribution. Knowing he was in the wrong, Li Dazhuang dared not confront her directly and fled instead. Liu Fang intended to let the matter rest, but Li Dazhuang harbored resentment and secretly colluded with local thugs to frame Old Liu, leading to his wrongful imprisonment and eventual death in jail.
When Liu Fang learned of her father's passing, she was devastated and vowed to avenge him. She searched tirelessly for evidence but could never bring down Li Dazhuang. Ultimately disheartened, she left the village and vanished without a trace.
"Liu Fang has not returned since she left the village," the Old Tailor lamented. "I never expected she would come back."
After hearing the Old Tailor's words, Li Fugen felt a sense of clarity wash over him. He finally understood that all of this was part of Liu Fang's revenge plan.
"Do you know where Liu Fang is now?" Li Fugen asked.
"I do not know," the Old Tailor shook his head. "She has not returned since leaving the village."
Li Fugen bid farewell to the Old Tailor and returned to the Village Committee. He took out the copper coin and examined it closely. He knew that this coin was the tool of Liu Fang's revenge.
He recalled the words of the Old Wizard and the curse inscribed on the coin. He understood that he had to find Liu Fang quickly to stop her from continuing her quest for vengeance.
Determined, he decided to seek out Liu Fang's mother to inquire about her daughter.
Upon arriving at Liu Fang's home, he discovered that her mother had passed away, leaving behind only a dilapidated courtyard.
He searched the yard for clues, hoping to find something useful. Suddenly, he stumbled upon a Diary.
Picking up the Diary, he opened its yellowed pages, and elegant handwriting caught his eye.
The Diary detailed Liu Fang's revenge plan. She intended to make Li Dazhuang's family pay in blood for their wrongdoings.
"Li Dazhuang, you caused my father's death; I will bring ruin upon your family!" the Diary stated.
Li Fugen closed the Diary, filled with shock. He had not anticipated the depth of Liu Fang's desire for revenge.
He knew he had to find Liu Fang as soon as possible to prevent her from carrying out her plans.
As he looked at the words in the Diary, unease settled within him. He sensed that a greater storm was about to unfold.
Li Fugen resolved to search for more clues within Liu Fang's Diary. As he carefully flipped through its pages, he realized that her revenge plan was far more intricate than he had imagined.
Liu Fang not only wanted to bring ruin to Li Dazhuang's family but also intended for the entire village to pay the price for his crimes. In her diary, she wrote about using the curse on the copper coin to plunge the villagers into panic and chaos.
Li Fugen was taken aback; he had not anticipated that Liu Fang's desire for revenge was so extreme. He realized he had to find her quickly to stop her plan.
He recalled the Old Wizard's words and thought of Liu Fang's mother's grave. He felt that Liu Fang was likely hiding near the tomb.
Arriving at Liu Fang's mother's grave, he searched around. Suddenly, he discovered a concealed entrance.
Cautiously, he stepped into the opening and found himself in a basement. The basement was filled with strange props and sheets of paper covered in incantations.
As he examined the items and papers closely, he realized they were all used for casting spells. A chill ran down his spine; he knew Liu Fang was here.
He continued searching in the basement until he finally found Liu Fang.
Liu Fang sat in a corner, her face pale, her eyes filled with hatred. She clutched the copper coin tightly in her hand.
"Liu Fang, you need to stop this," Li Fugen said.
"Stop?" Liu Fang scoffed. "Why should I stop? I want Li Dazhuang to pay! I want the whole village to suffer for his crimes!"
"If you do this, you'll only cause more harm," Li Fugen replied.
"I don't care!" Liu Fang shouted angrily. "I want everyone to know what kind of scum Li Dazhuang is!"
"I know you are in pain, but you cannot seek revenge this way," Li Fugen said. "Doing so will only lead you to further suffering."
Liu Fang fell silent. She looked at Li Fugen, her eyes filled with a complex mix of emotions.
"Li Fugen, do you really want to help me?" Liu Fang asked.
"Yes, I want to help you," Li Fugen replied. "I want to help you step out of the shadow of hatred."
Liu Fang sighed and said, "Li Fugen, you are a good person. But I cannot stop. There is no turning back for me."
"You still have a chance," Li Fugen insisted. "As long as you are willing, I can help you."
Liu Fang shook her head and said, "Li Fugen, you cannot help me. I have lost everything; I only want revenge for my father."
She raised the copper coin in her hand and said to Li Fugen, "Li Fugen, you should go. I do not want to hurt you."
Li Fugen looked at Liu Fang, filled with helplessness. He knew he could not stop her.
He turned and left the basement, his heart heavy with sorrow. He understood that a greater storm was about to unfold.
As Li Fugen stepped out of the basement and gazed at the overcast sky, unease settled in his heart. He knew that Liu Fang's plan for revenge was about to begin.
