In a fit of anger, Wang Yushan suddenly reached out to open the car door and said, "If you don't agree, I'll go back and die with him."
Before Chung Yuyang could hit the brakes, Wang Yushan had already jumped out of the car.
Beside her, Yao Meling shot her a glare and said, "You should at least check the size of that wedding dress; it won't fit you!"
Wang Yushan looked at her in confusion, and Chung Yuyang explained, "Meling is pregnant with my child. Even if my mother finds out tomorrow that the bride isn't you, she will still accept it because of the baby in her belly."
"Congratulations," Wang Yushan said with a bright smile at Yao Meling, but Yao Meling coldly replied, "If you're going to leave, just go far away and don't come back to disturb our lives."
"Yushan, I won't neglect your family. Don't worry; I won't let your sister and brother-in-law suffer," Chung Yuyang promised. Wang Yushan looked at him gratefully and deeply bowed, saying, "Thank you, Brother Yu Yang."
Chung Yuyang lowered his head, a bitter smile tugging at his lips as he recalled a small child following behind him, innocently saying, "Brother Yu Yang, Mommy says you're going to be my husband from now on, not my brother. But I want you to always be my brother!"
Wang Yushan gazed at the wedding dress just delivered—a creamy white adorned with this year's trendiest silver sequins. She picked it up for inspection; the dress had a long train but short sleeves. She glanced at the scars on her arms and figured they wouldn't be concealed.
These scars were from when she jumped out of a car six months ago, an act that unexpectedly led Chung Yuyang to agree to her request. Before long, the Constable announced to the public that Xu Ziyao had succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.
In truth, Xu Ziyao had been sent out of Shanghai by someone arranged by Chung Yuyang. Wang Yushan never asked where she was taken. She had already agreed to marry Chung Yuyang.
With the wedding set for tomorrow, Wang Yushan's mood grew increasingly heavy.
Although she didn't love Chung Yuyang, he had saved Ziyao's life, and she felt obligated to repay that debt on Ziyao's behalf.
At this moment, it was the last time she would think of him. Starting tomorrow, she would bury him deep in her heart, entombed in memories.
“Ziyao...” Wang Yushan sobbed softly. Perhaps she would spend her entire life trying to forget him.
Just then, the door opened, and Chung Yuyang walked in. She quickly wiped her tears and looked up to find Yao Meling following behind him. Today, Yao Meling had not adorned herself with her usual glamorous makeup; instead, she casually sat down on the sofa beside them.
“You two?” she asked, puzzled.
Chung Yuyang reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a wad of cash along with a train ticket, handing them to her. “This is for tonight's train to Chongqing. I will send someone to escort you out of Shanghai.”
“Aren't you going to marry me?” she asked in surprise, slowly taking the items from him. A glimmer of hope cautiously emerged within her.
“You never truly wanted to marry me. What meaning does such a marriage hold? Although I, Chung Yuyang, am known for my flirtatious nature, I understand that feelings must be mutual. Living together for a lifetime as if you owe it to another man would be repugnant to me as well.”
Chung Yuyang spoke calmly, avoiding Wang Yushan's surprised gaze.
“Then the wedding is set for tomorrow?”
The Eight-Year War of Resistance had finally triumphed.
In this ancient city with a history spanning a thousand years, it had transformed into a sea of jubilation.
Amidst the throngs of people, soldiers and civilians alike shed tears of joy at this victorious moment. The battle-hardened warriors found familiar faces in the crowd, and groups of soldiers and officers embraced one another, overwhelmed with emotion.
Wang Yushan held her camera, capturing this touching moment. The scene moved her deeply, and she felt grateful that after eight years as a war correspondent, she had managed to survive unscathed.
Surrounded by joyful reunions, she stood alone in the crowd, feeling solitary. Wang Yushan slowly lifted her gaze to the sky, which was clear and beautifully blue without a hint of smoke.
Suddenly, she thought of the person who had always occupied her heart. Perhaps he was under the same blue sky at this moment, sharing in the joy of victory. My beloved Ziyao, I will continue to wait for you with all my life, longing for your smile that shines like the warm sun of early spring, even if it is just in my dreams.
“Comrade reporter, could you help us take a picture?” A group of soldiers nearby waved at her. Wang Yushan pulled her gaze away and raised her camera toward them.
Just as she was about to press the shutter, one soldier stretched out his arm and called out, “Xu Chang, come over and take a picture with us!”
“Coming!” A dashing officer in a yellow-green uniform ran into the frame, surrounded by soldiers who cheered him on. He smiled brightly at the camera, radiating like a sunbeam adorned with colorful halos.
In that moment, she finally caught a glimpse of the face that had lingered in her mind.
Wang Yushan slowly lowered her camera, her lips trembling into a smile as tears welled up in her eyes…
